WBC OFFICIAL DEFENDS SISNORIO-SASAKUL MISMATCH By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Wed, 04 Apr 2007 Bangkok Post columnist and veteran sportswriter Edward Thangarajah who is a WBC official has attempted to defend the mismatch involving Filipino Lito Sisnorio and former WBC champion Chatchai Sasakul despite the fact that Sisnorio was knocked out in the fourth round and died after brain surgery. In an overseas telephone conversation with Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today, Thangarajah vehemently protested our branding the fight a terrible mismatch despite the fact that Sisnorio had a record of only 5 wins in 11 fights while Sasakul had a record of 58-3 with 37 knockouts. Thangarajah said “don’t jump to conclusions because that boy Sisnorio was trying to climb up the ladder and he came and fought here. How can you say it’s a mismatch, its not right. You are letting down the people who are trying to organize fights here.” When confronted by the ring records of Sasakul and Sisonorio’s previous opponent, reigning WBC flyweight champion Pongsaklek Wonjongkam (63-2, 31 KO’s) who scored a 7th round TKO over Sisnorio last January, Thangarajah responded “its up to you.” The WBC official argued “how can you get these poor boys to help their parents when you talk like this. These boxers are coming here because they are poor. Why cant you people arrange fights in the Philippines?” He added, “they want to have fights, they want to earn some money so naturally they are coming out here to fight.” Thangarajah also questioned why there were no details of Thai super flyweight Deeden Kengkarun who reportedly fought in the Philippines recently and died when he returned to Thailand after suffering convulsions. A check with the GAB indicated there was no record of such a fight. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
