PACQUIAO SADDENED BY POLITICAL OPPONENT’S MOVES PhilBoxing.com Tue, 03 Apr 2007 LOS ANGELES, CA -- Barely two weeks before Manny Pacquiao takes on the challenge of a an unbeaten, 5’10 Mexican opponent, moves by his political opponent to stop local broadcast of his fight has greatly saddened and frustrated the Philippine boxing icon. Pacquiao’s political opponent for a seat in the first congressional district of South Cotabato and General Santos City, the incumbent and opposition leader Darlene Antonino-Custodio, has sought for a total blackout on news about Pacquiao not related to his candidacy including the telecast of his upcoming bout against Jorge Solis in San Antonio, Texas on April 15 (April 16 in Manila). “Nalulungkot ako na pati ang laban ko ay gusto nilang pigilan at ginagawa na nilang personalan ang labanan,” said Pacquiao, who begged Antonino-Custodio to spare him the trouble of distraction prior to his important bout. “Alam naman ng lahat na ang pagbo-boksing ay trabaho ko. Itinataya ko ang aking buhay sa page-ensayo at sa itaas ng ring para sa karangalan ng Filipinas na walang halong pulitika,” said Pacquiao, voted by as “2006 Fighter of the Year” by American and other news media around the world. “Miss Custodio has put her personal interests at the expense of the public and I think this is not fair not just for me but to everyone, for all the fans of boxing and of fair play. This is not a good example and lesson for the youth,” added Pacquiao. “Ito ba ang ibig sabihin niya ng Genuine Opposition, ang pagpigil sa mga bagay na nagbubuklod at nagbibigay saya sa lahat ng Filipino? Sana naman, huwag nilang ipagkait ang kaunting ligaya para sa aking mga kababayan.” Pacquiao has tried to concentrate only on training and honing for his fight against Solis, the tall Guadalajara native who has won all 32 fights (23 knockouts), but the news got to him through the grapevine. “I have stopped fighting just for myself but for the honor of the whole Filipino people. I ask for the help of my countrymen to pray for me that I overcome this challenge and this distraction and that we all emerge victorious in the end,” added Pacquiao. Still, Pacquiao remained cool despite the disturbance even as he invited Antonino-Custodio to watch the fight on TV should her moves get junked by the Comelec and that she gets united with all Filipinos throughout the world who have started to come out and become proud of their heritage. Born in Stanford, California, the two-term congresswoman Antonino-Custodio has filed six House Resolutions in the past commending Pacquiao for his outstanding exploits over Erik Morales, Oscar Larios, Hector Velazquez and Fahsang 3K Battery, among others. Now fighting for political survival against the man whom she has lauded in the past, Antonino-Custodio hopes to stop the well-loved “Peoples’s Champion” from gaining momentum even as surveys have apparently gone in favor of Pacquiao, the heavy underdog prior to his entry in politics. |
