Canelo Wins Close Split Decision Victory Over Lara

Rluvsboxing @Ringside -- In the main event Canelo Alvarez coming off an impressive victory over Alfredo Angulo looked to make a statement against the tough WBA junior middleweight champion, Lara, in a nontitle bout.

Round 1
From the opening bell Canelo applied pressure throwing shots from all different angles with bad intentions. Lara wanted no part of Canelo's offense and used his speed and good footwork to evade his stronger opponent. Lara used good movement and an effective jab to outbox Canelo in round one. Round 1 goes to Lara.

Round 2
In round two Canelo began to close the gap by connecting with body shots, but Lara did a good job of utilizing his jab and good lateral movement. Wild swings and a lot misses from Canelo, but more of the same action in round 2. Round 2 goes to Lara.

Round 3
Much of the same action in round 3. Round 3 goes to Lara.

Round 4
In Round 4 Canelo was able to connect on body shots to slow down Lara. Canelo wins round 4.

Round 5
In round 5 Lara continues to box effectively, but even though Canelo presses the action and is aggressive he still misses a lot of punches. Round 5 for Lara.

Round 6
Canelo closes the gap in round 6 and begins to land some of his punches. A close round, but Round 6 goes to Canelo.

Round 7
Much of the same action from the previous round, but Round 7 goes to Lara.

Round 8
Seems as though Lara took round 8 off. Canelo continues to press the action. Round 8 goes to Canelo.

Round 9
In round 9 Canelo continues to press the action. Round 9 goes to Canelo.

Round 10
In round 10 Lara begins to again box effectively and make Canelo miss most of his punches. Round 10 for Lara.

Round 11
Much of the same action in round 11. The 11th round goes to Lara.

Round 12
Canelo finishes round 12 strong and presses the action and is able to connect on a few shots.Canelo finishes the fight strong while Lara remains on the defensive. Round 12 goes to Canelo.
The judges scored the fight 115-113 for Lara, 115-113 for Canelo, and 117-111 for Canelo. Philboxing had Lara wining the fight (7 rounds for Lara and 5 rounds for Canelo). According to Showstats, Lara threw a total of 386 punches and landed 107. Canelo threw a total of 415 and landed 97. This was 28% accuracy for Lara to Canelo's 23% accuracy. Canelo improves to 44-1-1, 31KOs. Lara drops to 19-2-2, 12KOs. He retains is wBA belt because this was a nontitle bout.

On The Undercard:
Abner Mares of Mexico faced off against Jonathan Oquendo of Puerto Rico. All these two fighters needed was a phone booth to fight with neither backing down. Mares prevailed with a unanimous decision victory. Mares improves to 27-1-1, 14 KOs, while Oquendo drops to 24-4, 16 KOs.

In a cross roads fight, former Champ Juan Manuel Lopez faced off against Ricardo Vargas. Both fighters started out feeling one another out with extreme caution in the first round. Both fighters had their moments in round two. By the third round it was an all out brawl with Vargas getting the better of the exchanges leading to a knockdown. Lopez was out on his feet but managed to finish the round. Lopez's corner had seen enough and stopped the bout. Vargas was awarded a TKO victory and he added the WBO intl and NABF junior lightweight 140lbs titles to his trophy case. Vargas is now 35-3,32 KOs, while Lopez drops to 34-4, 31KOs.

In a battle for the WBA Interim super lightweight title, Johan Perez of Venezuela faced off against Mauricio Herrera, of California. In a close fight with nonstop action back and forth where each fighter would have their moments, crowd favorite Herrera eeked out a close descion victory to become the new WBA interim 140lbs champion. One of the three judges had the fight scored 114-114 a draw, while the other two had it 116-112 for Herrera, a majority descion victory.

Yamaguchi Falcao of Los angeles, California took on Jesus Cruz of Puerto Rico, Both fighters brought there A game in exciting toe to toe action in the fist round. 1st round was even. More of the same action in round two, but the edge goes to Cruz. Falcao uses power punches and speed to shut out Cruz in the third round. Cruz's corner suspecting he may have suffered a broken jaw and had taken too much punishment in round three have the referee stop the bout. Falcao improves to 2-0, 1KO, while Cruz drops to 1-2-1.

Tomoki Kameda of Japan put his WBO Bantamweight title and undefeated record (29-0,18 KOs) against Thailand's Pungluang Singyu (46-2, 31 KOs). At the opening bell Kameda used good lateral movement and foot work as Singyu stalked the elusive champion. Round one went to the champion. Kameda continued to box , while Singyu began to close the gap in round two. Round two also goes to the champion. Much of the same action in rounds three. In round 4, Singyu finally found his target and hurt the champion. Round 4 goes to the challenger. In Round 5 Toe to toe action with Singyu getting the better of the exchanges. Round 5 again goes to the challenger.In round 6 Kameda once again took control of the fight. In Round 7 Kameda scores a knockdown of Singyu with a perfect left hook to the body. Singyu was in such apparent pain that he could not beat the referee's count. The time was 1:35 of the 7 round. Kameda improves to a perfect 30-0, 19 KOs and retains his championship. Singyu drops to 46-3, 31 KOs.

Jason Quigley of Ireland made a successful professional debut into the middleweight division by dispatching tailor made opponet, Howard Reece, in 1:22 of the 1st round. Reece drops to 2-7, 1KO.

Journeyman Enrique Quevedo, of Los Angeles, California by way of Mexico upset peviously unbeaten top Cuban prospect Youandris Salinas now fighting out of Miami. Salinas was outboxing and winning the fight until he was knockdown in the 4th round and beat the 10 count. Salinas who had also suffered a cut to his left eye tried to fight off the game Quevedo to no avail. From then on it was all down hill for Salinas. Quevedo continued to press the action and scored another knockdown in the 5th round. Again Salinas would beat the 10 count and indicated to the referee he could continue. Quevedo would close the show with a final knockdown 2:56 in the 5th round. This time the referee would not give a 10 count. Quevedo improved to 16-7-1, 10 KOs, while Salinas drops to 20-1-2, 13KOs. Look for Quevedo to land a title shot next time around.

John Karl Sosa won by split decesion over Luis Bello improving his record to 12-0, 6KOs. Luis Bello of Mexico drops to 5-2, 2KOs. Scores were 59-55 by all three judges.
