LOMACHENKO WINS OVER RUSSELL BY MAJORITY DECISION
By Ed de la Vega, DDS PhilBoxing.com Sun, 22 Jun 2014

CARSON, CA -- The supporting main event was an unbelievable match-up. It was a fight between a rapidly rising young veteran Gary Russell of Capitol Hills, Maryland (24-1-0, 14KO), if after 20 fights, you can call him that, and an equally younger Eastern European fighter, Vasyl Lomachengko of Uraine (2-1-0, 1KO) who is the darling of his promoter. After all, why would he get 2 title fights in his only third pro fight?
In spite of the great discrepancy in the fight records of the two fighters, their fight however came out as advertised. It was a tactical and calculating, making it a very nice one to watch even from our media perch high above the StubHubCenter tennis court. A title fight indeed.
There were fantastic exchanges at center ring giving the crowd something to really to cheer about as the first night of this 2014 summer rolled in over the stadium. "Russia. Russia, came the chants whenever Lomachengko seems to get the upperhand in the exchanges. But they in an instant turned to "USA, USA" as Russel storms back.
As the fight progressed to the middle rounds, Russel seem to have figured out his opponent. But all of a sudden Lomachengko fought back clearly winning round 7.
Lomachengko fell in round 9 but referee Jack Reiss was right there front center and correctly ruled it a "slip". At any rate, it gave those few souls on the way to the beer line a reason to run back and check what was happening.
Round 10 was Lomachengko's round. Well, at least from our perspective. He landed a few power rights that caught the attention of Russell and cheers from the crowd.
The championship rounds exchanges decided the fight. Lomachengko all of a sudden came alive towards the last minute of the final round that drew standing cheers from the crowd. That may have won him the fight.
In the end the judge saw it that way, but was a split decision. 114-114, 116-112, 116-112.
