IBF WARNS RACHMAN By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Thu, 15 Mar 2007 The International Boxing Federation has warned IBF minimum weight champion Muhammad Rachman that he would be stripped of his title if he fails to defend it against mandatory challenger Florante Condes of the Philippines before May 6. The promoters of Condes, Bobby Bostick, has been given the runaround by Tourino Tidar Promotion’s Soeryo Goeritno who, after agreeing to fight Condes in the US, is now demanding a purse of $75,000 and several other perks which the Condes camp described as "unrealistic" and unacceptable. In a last resort to salvage the negotiations and the title fight Bostick offered Goeritno a $30,000 purse plus two options in case the hard-hitting Condes won the title but the champion’s handlers turned it down. Instead they offered Condes $10,000 to fight in Indonesia. Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today learned that the IBF called Goeritno by overseas telephone and followed up with a letter from IBF president Marian Muhammad’s office telling the Rachman people that his mandatory title defense against Condes was due last February 6 but that Rachman had submitted a medical certificate claiming he had suffered "injuries to the shoulder region." IBF Medical Director William Lathan reviewed the medical certificate and termed the diagnosis " vague and non-specific". However, Dr. Lathan said that a 90 day medical extension would probably allow some improvement of the right shoulder function. The IBF pointed out that under its rules "if it is determined by the physician that the boxer will be disabled for a period to exceed 90 days beyond the mandatory due date" the Championship Committee with the approval of the Board of Directors may declare the title vacant. The IBF said that the 90 day extension had been granted but that Rachman must comply with his mandatory title defense before May 6 otherwise the title will be declared vacant.
