NBA Playoffs -- Foul troubled Bulls fall to Wizards in Game 1

PhilBoxing.com

CHICAGO -- Easter Sunday was a night of tight officiating as the No.4 seed Chicago Bulls hosted the No.5 seed Washington Wizards in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinals at a sold out United Center.

Foul troubles doomed the Bulls early. In the span of 5 1/2 minutes, they were whistled for four fouls, ending the first quarter with 7 and the Wizards capitalized by making 6 of their 9 free throws.

Despite the foul trouble, the Bulls were only down 2 at the end of the first quarter, 24-22.

The second quarter fared slightly worse for the Bulls with the team getting called for an additional five fouls in the first 3 minutes, notching up the team's total to 15 to end the half.

The Wizards also got whistled for fouls in the second quarter with 10, ending the half with 14 and the Bulls' D. J. Augustin cashed in with 8-for-8 free throws.

Coming off of injury, Wizards forward Nene went 7 for 10 from the field by the half, racking up 14 points, while teammate John Wall contributed 12 points and four assists.

Bulls center Joakim Noah had a stellar first half with four offensive boards and two defensive. Kirk Hinrich and Augustin combined for 22 points also at the half.

Even with all the foul calls on both teams, the Bulls stayed close to the Wizards by remaining within one for much of the quarter and finally took the lead with 3:40 left in the half. The Bulls hit their stride right before the half and took a 6-point lead at the bend, 54-48.

The third quarter saw the foul calls turning their attention to the Wizards, as they tallied five more team fouls, totaling 19 by the end of the third. Nene, Wall, forward Trevor Booker, and foward/guard Martell Webster each ended the third with three personal fouls.

The Bulls had 17 fouls to end the third but also had five players scoring in the double digits, Hinrich, Augustin, forward Mike Dunleavy, forward Taj Gibson, and forward Carlos Boozer who also racked up 9 rebounds. Going into the fourth, the Bulls' lead had dwindled, 75-72, with Wizards center Marcin Gortat grabbing six rebounds in the third period alone.

The series started with the perfect playoffs feel with all 21,694 hometown Chicagoans wildly rejoicing at each Bulls basket, dunk, and rebound, especially in the fourth quarter when a Bulls win was within their grasp with 4 1/2 minutes left in regulation.

However, a storybook ending was not to be had as the Wizards took the lead with less than three minutes to play and never gave it back, outscoring the Bulls 10-5 with 6 of those points coming in the final 34 seconds.

The Wizards finished off the Bulls 102-93 to steal home court advantage. Nene, who scored the game high of 24 points, commented that he felt blessed to play on Easter Sunday and to help his team start the series "the right way" with a win.

The Wizards lead the series 1-0 going into Game 2 set for Tuesday night also at the United Center. (KG)
