REFEREE VOCALE DID A GOOD JOB IN GANOY-PEDEN FIGHT By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Tue, 13 Mar 2007 International referee Brad Vocale did a good job in the IBF Pan Pacific lightweight title fight in which Sydney-based Filipino Ranee Ganoy scored a sensational eighth round stoppage over former world title challenger Robbie Peden in Brisbane, Australia late Saturday. Ganoy’s manager, Sydney-based Filipino Dido Bohol told Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today that Ganoy dropped Peden in the sixth and seventh rounds and despite the battering referee Brad Vocale refused to stop the fight. However, after reviewing the fight it was clear that Vocale was correct in letting the fight continue to give Peden a chance since he still had some fight left in him but in the end he quickly stepped in to correctly call a halt early in the eighth round. Perhaps the only criticism that could be leveled against Vocale who is one of the referees nurtured by internationally respected New Zealander Bruce McTavish is that he warned Peden too many times for holding and hitting on the break. However, most fight fans would agree that a warning was appropriate unlike New York based Puerto Rican Samuel Viruet who deducted two points from Z “The Dream” Gorres which the horrendous judging of Raul Caiz Jr and Chuck Giampa cost him the WBO super flyweight title. Peden is the same fighter who lost a twelve round unanimous decision to WBC super featherweight champion Marco Antonio Barrera in September 2005 in Las Vegas and entered the ring after an eighteen month layoff. Peden said he has been wanting to fight in Brisbane for some time and was quoted by Mark Vester of boxingscene.com as saying “lightweight is a pretty good division for me right now.” Ganoy who is trained by brothers Hermie and Jeffrey Bohol has won his last four fights by stoppage with three TKO’s and one KO. Ganoy’s biggest win was against former Commonwealth Champion Fatai Onekeke on September 15 in what was regarded as Australia’s “Fight of the Year” in 2006.
