MALULAN VIES FOR WBO YOUTH TITLE IN BAGUIO CARD
By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Sun, 11 Mar 2007
Young prospect Javier Malulan of Baguio City will shoot for the vacant World Boxing Organization Youth flyweight crown on April 7 at the 3,000-capacity Baguio Convention Center when he takes on Bangkok's Saensaknoi Or Muangklang.
Promoter Raffy Panagan said in an interview that this will be Baguio's biggest event in recent years, which will be held at the end of the Holy Week, which is expected to draw throngs of vacationers at the country's Summer Capital.
"I have already coordinated with the WBO regarding this promotion, and everything has been set, including the sanctioning fees. We promise to give Baguio boxing fans real boxing, just like what you have recently at the 'Moment of Truth' in Cebu," Panagan said.
The WBO has recently established its youth titles in hopes of giving the younger fighters their chance to shoot for belts which would not have otherwise been available to them.
Popular fighter Rey 'Boom Boom' Bautista owns the WBO Youth superbantam title, and Malulan hopes to follow in the footsteps of the famous Boholano fighter.
WBO vice-president for Asia Pacific Leon Panoncillo will be flying in to personally supervise the Malulan-Saensaknoi title showdown, noting that the fight pits two young power-punching fighters.
A strong undercard is being arranged to complement the explosive main event, said promoter Panagan.
