GORRES MAY GO AFTER IBF TITLE
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Thu, 08 Mar 2007
Deprived of victory by an incredible split decision loss in his own hometown, the handlers of stylish Filipino southpaw Z “The Dream” Gorres are looking at the possibility of going after the vacant IBF super flyweight title instead of a rematch with WBO champion Fernando Montiel.
In an overseas telephone conversation with Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today, Golden Boy Promotions vice president Eric Gomez said that Dimitri Kirilov of Russia may fight for the vacant IBF title and should he win there was good chance that Gorres could get a title shot since Golden Boy has very good relations with the Kirilov camp.
Kirilov is currently rated No.5 behind Martin Castillo who is No.3 and Alexander Munoz who is No.4. The top two spots in the IBF are vacant along with the title.
Both Gorres and his handlers led by the father-and-son tandem of respected boxing patron Tony Aldeguer and his son Michael who has slowly assumed the mantle of his father as well as Gorres have not hidden their bitter disappointment over Gorres’ loss to WBO champion Fernando Montiel who clearly lost eight of the 12 rounds but incredibly retained his title with a split decision. The result has seen a cooling off of relations with the WBO which the famed ALA Gym had consistently helped in promoting in the Asian region in the past.
Referee Samuel Viruet, a New Yorker from Puerto Rico, Los Angeles based Mexican judge Raul Caiz and Chuck Giampa of Las Vegas did Gorres in. Viruet deducted two points from Gorres for holding in the 10th and 12th rounds with no prior warning while Caiz had Montiel the winner by a score of 115-111 and. Giamp 114-112. In stark contrast Judge Denny Nelson had Gorres the winner 115-111.
Gomez said Golden Boy Promotions would do what Aldeguer wants and said that they would discuss the possibility of a non-title fight for Gorres before another shot at a world title.
