CHICAGO -- In a battle between two of the NBA's top defensive teams, the Memphis Grizzlies bested the Chicago Bulls, 85-77, Friday night at the United Center.
Grizzlies' big men Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph controlled the paint with a combined 28 points and 21 boards while Mike Miller pumped in 14. Kosta Koufos added 12 points as Memhpis triumphed despite making only 35 of 78 field goals.
Off the slow start, with no bench points to help power the offense, Chicago scored only 12 in the opening quarter, shooting a measly 21.7 percent from the field. Fortunately, the Bulls were down only by three by holding the Grizzlies to just 15.
D.J. Augustin scored 12 points off the bench in the second quarter as the Bulls came alive with 27 points. Taj Gibson followed closely behind Augustin with 8 points of his own as the Bulls took the lead 39-35 going into the half.
The Grizzlies did not fare well in the second quarter, scoring 20 points but unable to keep the lead.
The first half of the third quarter was much of the same for the Bulls who led by eight at one points. The Bulls, however, started to fumble as the quarter winded down, allowing the Grizzlies to reclaim the lead going into the fourth quarter, 65-63..
Scoring five quick points to start the fourth period, the Grizzlies padded their lead to 70-63. The Bulls struggled late with their shots, allowing the Grizzlies to hang on.
The Grizzlies improved to 35-26 in the Western Conference standings while the Bulls fell 34-28 in the Eastern Conference. (KB)
