MANILA, Philippines ? International Master (IM) Rolando Nolte reinforced his position as one of the Philippines? top chess players when he won the 5th Penang Heritage City International Chess Open 2013 at the Red Rock Hotel in Penang, Malaysia on Friday night.

Nolte defeated Malaysian Yeoh Li Tian in the final round to score 7.5 points in nine outings and captured the coveted title.

With his latest feat, Nolte earned the top prize worth 5,000 Malaysian Ringgit.

With the victory, Nolte's performance boosted the nation's morale, said National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) Vice President for Visayas and NCFP Committee Chairman for Grassroots Development and promotions Atty. Neri Javier Colmenares.

?Once again our flag has been raised in this foreign land after knowing that our Filipino kababayan IM Rolando Nolte got another International chess title again,? said Atty. Colmenares, also representative of Bayan Muna Party-list group.

Atty. Colmenares believes that other Filipinos can also excel in the chess sport.

?(It?s) proof that the Filipinos can really compete internationally in the field of chess sports," added Colmenares, himself is a chess champion from Western Visayas, having placed second in the 1976 Palarong Pambansa.

Meanwhile, IM Andrey Kvon of Uzbekistan, IM candidate Roel Abelgas of the Philippines and FM Riste Menkinoski of Macedonia finished with 7.0 points, good for a share of second to 4th places.

GM Alexander Fominyh of Russia led the huge group of 6.5 pointers that includes Yeoh Li Tian, FM Nelson "Elo" Mariano III and Ivan Gil Biag of the Philippines, Fong Yit San of Malaysia, FM Deni Sonjaya of Indonesia, Marcus Chan of Malaysia and IM Luis Chiong IV of the Philippines.
