PACQUIAO MAY NOT BE QUALIFIED TO RUN IN GENSAN By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Tue, 13 Feb 2007 Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao may not be qualified to run for either Mayor of General Santos City or Congressman of South Cotabato. Commission on Elections chairman Ben Abalos in a telephone conversation with Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today said ?there might be overlapping of period from the day he claimed he is a resident of Manila and his transfer to GenSan.? Abalos stressed that ?for purposes of voting there is only a requirement of six months but for purposes of being a candidate for a political position you need at least one year.? The Comelec chairman said that if Pacquiao registered in Manila ?it is not only a presumption. That is a matter of fact because that is supposed to be under oath.? The Chairman indicated that if it is true that Pacquiao was a resident of Manila up to December 2006 then he cannot run for office in General Santos City. Reports indicated that Pacquiao visited the Comelec headquarters on July 5 last year to file a request for transfer of residency from General Santos City to Manila which sparked rumors that he was going to be the running mate of youthful sportsman Ali Atienza, the son of incumbent Manila Mayor Lito Atienza who is serving out his final term. In his request for transfer of residency, Pacquiao said he has been a Manila resident for the past two years and listed his residence at Unit 111, Building 2, Residencias de Manila at Paco, Barangay 832. However, it is a well known fact that when in Manila, Pacquiao stays at his home in BF Homes, Paranaque or hotels such as the Diamond Hotel on Roxas Boulevard or the Manila Hotel. Despite recently taking his oath before Mayor Atienza as a member of the Liberal Party after turning his back on KAMPI officials who were waiting for Pacquiao to take his oath at a top class restaurant, Pacquiao appears bent on filing his candidacy for either Mayor or congressman in his hometown and not in Manila raising questions of residency.
