John Scully Reacts to Mayweather Sr.'s attacks on Roach By Ryan Songalia PhilBoxing.com Mon, 05 Feb 2007 Following Oscar De La Hoya's decision to drop Floyd Mayweather Sr. from his corner for his fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr., a firestorm has raged between Mayweather Sr. and new trainer Freddie Roach. As reported by Mark Vester, Mayweather Sr. went on to publicly attack the credability and merits of the Los Angeles based Roach. "He knows he can't out-train me. He knows it like all the rest of them. I can talk the way I talk about these trainers because I can back it up. I can take one hand and do more things than he can with two hands. ... When you talk about Freddie the joke, coach Roach, come on, man. That's a joke. How could Oscar be so narrow-minded to get up and say what this man can do. This man couldn't teach a f**king cat to piss." Hartford staple and fellow trainer John "Iceman" Scully intimated disdain for the malicious assault on 2003's Trainer of the Year, stating that "it was uncalled for." Scully continues, "I suspect he is a guy who would have an air about him that he does everything right and you don't know as much as him. I definitely get the impression that he has a bad case of insecurity complex." "I suspect that there are a lot of fighters who would be turned off by Mayweather's ridiculous bragging and cockiness and self promotion, especially guys that were much more accomplished as boxers than he was." Referencing Mayweather Sr.'s claims to be the architect of a secret super-weapon in the form of the shoulder roll defense, the former Supermiddleweight and Cruiserweight contender offered the following information. "I asked Marlon Starling about it once because he beat Floyd twice and he told me that he didn't have any trouble figuring the style out. There was also a guy who was 6-6 at the time and he stopped Floyd in two rounds so that guy apparently figured it out, too. The thing is this. Maybe Oscar will land a huge left hook and the style will be rendered null and void, you know?" Mayweather Sr. has also claimed to be the X-factor that would tip this megafight in wither direction. "If you want me to tell you how to beat my son - and I'm the only one who can tell Oscar how to do that - then you need to pay me." Scully defuses such claims, stating "If he was as great as he says he is, he would have a stable full of multi million dollar superstar champions, wouldn't he? The so called 'Greatest Trainer of All Time' wouldn't have Oscar so ill-prepared for the Sturm fight either, right?" When pressed about which trainer, Mayweather Sr. or Roach, was the better qualified at his trade, the trainer of Jose Rivera and Mike Oliver offered some boxing philosophy about assessing such issues. "There is no way to really say who is the best trainer at that level. So much of it depends on how well a guy can relate to a fighter." Scully believes that the WBC Junior Middleweight titlist may benefit from a change in the corner. "Sometimes it's not even a better outlook that a new guy gives you as much as it is a different one, a fresh one. Fighters get stagnant sometimes and being in a new gym with a new trainer can make you feel reborn as a boxer in a way. Maybe the change will do Oscar a lot of good." "Oscar needs a great cornerman as much as a great trainer for this fight. He needs a great pair of eyes in the corner that night because a guy like him, no matter what happens in the gym, he is going to do a lot of things on his own that night. Remember, Oscar is no kid, he is a true veteran and one of the most accomplished guys in the last 25 years. He doesn't need to be held by the hand on fight night." Although offering no official pick, Scully maintains his integrity to the basic principles of the sport with his analysis. "I think Floyd will be and should be favored but at the same time, like I said, Oscar is a true veteran, a good puncher and a very knowledgeable boxing person. It's a 50-50 fight to me and so much will depend on what happens when Oscar lands his best shot on Mayweather's chin." Any questions or comments? Send them to me at mc_rson@yahoo.com . Got Myspace?
