Team USA's Quest for Gold Set in Stone at World Boxing Cup: Astana 2025 PhilBoxing.com Mon, 30 Jun 2025 ASTANA, Kazakhstan (June 29, 2025) – The USA Boxing Elite High Performance Team is gearing up for the second World Boxing Cup of 2025, as Billy Walsh and his squad learned their path to gold during Sunday’s tournament draw. The World Boxing Cup: Astana 2025 will commence on Monday, June 30, and conclude on Sunday, July 6, inside Zhaksylyk Ushkempirov Martial Arts Palace in Astana, Kazakhstan. The Stars and Stripes will be represented by 11 boxers, five male and six female. Team USA has earned a total of 14 medals from its previous two international events, making this the third international tournament of 2025 for the USA Boxing Elite High Performance roster. Getting it all started on Monday, June 30, for Team USA is Malachi Georges, who will square off against Italy's Aziz Abbes Mouhiidine in the 90 kg weight division. Georges, coming off a silver medal from the World Boxing Challenge Grand Prix Usti Nad Labem, will look to carry that momentum into this week. Georges will need two wins to earn at least a bronze medal and four wins to earn his first international gold medal. Team USA will be represented by five boxers on Tuesday, July 1, beginning with Orlando Zamora (male 55 kg). The Turlock, Calif., native will box Paris 2024 Olympic Games silver medalist Junior Alcantara, from the Dominican Republic, in the 46th bout of the event. Following Zamora will be Robby “Rahim” Gonzales (male 80 kg) and Yoseline Perez (female 54 kg). Gonzales will box Australia's Marlon Sevehon in bout No. 52, and Perez will go head-to-head with South Korea's Aeji Im in bout No. 53. Perez is the only USA boxer to earn a gold and a silver medal in international competition this year. Rounding out Tuesday’s slate for the Stars and Stripes are Alyssa Mendoza (female 57 kg) and Thomas Covington (male 60 kg). Mendoza is coming off a gold medal performance in the Czech Republic and will look to stay hot in her first matchup at the World Boxing Cup: Astana 2025 against Australia's Julie Ramadan. This matchup will take place in bout No. 73 and will be followed by Covington's matchup against Mongolia’s Lundaa Gantumur in bout No. 75. Moving on to Wednesday, July 3, Team USA will see four more boxers make their tournament debuts. Jennifer Lozano (female 51 kg) will box against Kazakhstan's Alua Balkibekova in bout No. 93, and fellow Paris 2024 Olympian Jajaira Gonzalez (female 60 kg) will box in bout No. 99 against the winner of India's Sanju Sanju and Dominican Republic's Katherine Bera. Rene Camacho (male 65 kg) will return to the ring after his bronze medal performance in the Czech Republic and will go up against Australia's Gene Keremete. Concluding Wednesday’s schedule for Team USA is Morelle McCane (women’s 65 kg) against Croatia's Mariela Steko in bout No. 115. Camacho's 65 kg weight class features 19 boxers, making it the largest weight class in the USA’s 11 brackets. McCane and Lozano's respective weight classes have 18 boxers participating in each bracket, making them the two largest female weight classes among the six in which Team USA is competing. Marie Rosendo (female 70 kg) will look to earn her second international medal in just her second event and will open the week on Thursday, July 3, against the winner of France's Andrea Badin and Germany's Leonie Muller. USA Boxing Head Coach Billy Walsh (Colorado Springs, Colo.) will lead the charge for Team USA at the World Boxing Cup: Astana 2025. National Resident Coach Timothy Nolan (Rochester, N.Y.), Nicole Burleson (Bethany, Okla.), and Eric Zimmerman (Alexandria, Va.) will assist Coach Walsh throughout the week.
