'Picasso' Lewkowicz Paints Another Boxing Match in Montiel-Gorres Championship PhilBoxing.com Sat, 03 Feb 2007 International matchmaker non-pareil Sampson ?Picasso? Lewkowicz has again made an impossible situation possible. In a message to Cebu boxing patron Tony Aldeguer, Lewkowicz reported that defending WBO Super Flyweight Champion Fernando ?Cochulito? Montiel signed today the contract for his mandatory defense fight against Cebuano phenom and WBO No. 1 Super Flyweight contender Z ?The Dream? Gorres. Together with Lewkowicz, in behalf of Cebuano promoter exemplar Sammy ?Don King? Gello-ani, and Montiel, Montiel?s manager and trainer Manuel Montiel Sr. also affixed signature on the dotted line. ?I have already received a copy of the contract,? revealed Gello-ani, ?And another copy has been given already to the WBO president (Francisco Valcarcel).? There had been some reports lately that Montiel might not be pushing through with his defense on the slated World Championship fight on Feb. 24 because of a recent shakeup in the Montiel camp due to some misunderstanding on the exact date on Montiel?s fight with Gorres. Montiel was apparently in the dark on the postponement of the Boxing World Cup on March 4, bringing back the defense fight to Feb. 24. After a purse bidding held on Nov. 27, 2006 in Puerto Rico won by the Gorres camp, the Montiel was mandated, under the WBO rules, to defend the title within 90 days after the bidding. ?Everything is clear now,? Gello-ani said, ?The Montiel camp has taken the appropriate decision in letting Montiel face Gorres on the ring. It shows that, despite some miscommunications happening there, they are acting as professional sportsmen who do not shrink from their responsibilities as defending champs.? The February 24 title card slated at the Cebu City Sports Complex in Cebu City will feature Montiel defending his title against Gorres. The undercards will include the title fights of Feider Viloria of Colombia and Bautista of Bohol for the vacant WBO Inter-Continental Super Bantamweight and WBO Youth Super Bantamweight titles; and of Simson Butar-Butar of Indonesia defending his WBO Asia Pacific Super Featherweight belt against Jimrex Jaca of Negros Oriental. Tickets are available for reservation at (6632) 346-3492, 346-3489, 412-4512, and 232-6888. |
