NINO STRIPPED OF TITLE; VILORIA FIGHTS FOR CROWN
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sat, 03 Feb 2007
The World Boxing Council has stripped light flyweight champion Omar Nino of Mexico of his title for testing positive for the banned substance, methamphetamine, in tests conducted after his November 18 title defense against Fil-American Brian Viloria in Las Vegas.
The WBC directed that No.1 contender Viloria should fight No. 2 contender Edgar Sosa of Mexico for the vacant crown with the winner ordered to defend the title against Nino.
In a statement the WBC said that in the light of the fact the WBC believes Nino "did not voluntarily commit the infraction and considering his clean record has won him the trust of this organization" the world organization declared that Nino will be the challenger for whoever is the new champion.
The Nevada Boxing Commission suspended the 30 year old Mexican after he tested positive for methamphetamine following a controversial draw in a rematch with Viloria who lost a unanimous decision to Nino in a lackluster performance in August that same year. Viloria had earlier won the title with a sensational first round knockout over Eric Ortiz on September 10, 2005 and then successfully defended the title with a twelve round unanimous decision over former champion Jose Antonio Aguirre on February 18, 2006.
Viloria has a record of 19-1-1 with 12 knockouts while the 27 year old Sosa has a record of 26-5 with 14 KO’s. In his last fight on September 2, 2006 Sosa won by a tenth round technical decision over former world champion Noel Arambulet, the same fighter who lost the title to the Philippines Joma Gamboa some years ago.
Sosa is the WBC Central American Boxing Federation (Fecarbox) champion having won the title with a fifth round knockout over Romulo Gamez on June 30 last year.
