LAGUNA WILL HOST THE 2014 PALARONG PAMBANSA

PhilBoxing.com

Laguna has won the bidding for the hosting of the 2014 Palarong Pambansa, the 57th edition of the national student games, as the game?s executive committee awarded the province to stage the biggest annual sports event.

Education Secretary Bro. Armin Luistro and Assistant Secretary Tonisito Umali announced the hosting in a meeting on Thursday at the Department of Education central office in Pasig City. Present during the announcement were Laguna Gov. ER Ejercito, Laguna Sports Coordinator Albert Abarquez and Marikina City Mayor Del de Guzman, whose city also bidded for the Palaro. The partner agency Philippine Sports Commission was represented by commissioner Jolly Gomez.

Marikina, according to Gomez, will host another major student meet, the sixth ASEAN Schools Games in December 2014.

Laguna?s modern sports facilities including the Laguna Recreational, Education, Cultural and Sports Stadium and a 70-meter world-class archery range, and the newly built track oval, football field, and dorm was the advantage of the province in winning it over the other bidders.

Some 2,000 elementary and high school students are expected to compete in the 2014 Palaro which will include three new demonstration sports in wushu, wrestling and billiards.

Marikina, on the other hand, will host to some 1,500 student athletes from 11 nations for the Asean schools meet.

This will be the first time that Laguna will host the Palarong Pambansa after failing several times to bring the national games to the province in the past 10 years. Laguna has a track record of hosting several Southern Luzon legs of the Batang Pinoy.

Laguna previously lost to Tubod, Iloilo City, Naga City, Koronadal City, Puerto Princesa City, Tacloban City, San Jose in Tarlac, Dapitan City, Lingayen and Dumaguete City in the Palaro hosting rights.

This time its Laguna's turn to beat Region 4A?s Batangas City, Region 4B?s Puerto Princesa City and Mindoro province, and Marikina City of the National Capital Region.
