DE LA HOYA, GOMEZ MEET Z, BOOM BOOM AT GBP OFFICE! By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Tue, 30 Jan 2007 Golden Boy Oscar de la Hoya today gave his blessing to fast-rising Filipino fighters WBO No.1 super bantamweight contender Rey “Boom-Boom” Bautista and WBO No. 1 super flyweight contender Z “The Dream” Gorres for their upcoming title bids on Feb. 24 in the “Moment of Truth” at the Cebu City Sports Complex. In a message sent to Cebu’s boxing patron Antonio L. Aldeguer, two-time Elorde awardee for Trainer of the Year Edito “Ala” Villamor reported that De la Hoya was amazed to see Bautista and Gorres in top shape when the duo paid him a courtesy visit at his office in Los Angeles, California after hard rounds of training at the Wild Card Gym of celebrated Freddie Roach. “The fight in Cebu City would not be an easy one for either of them as they would be pitted against boxers who are willing to give their all to keep their belts,” Villamor quoted De la Hoya saying. “But I am very confident that Boom-Boom and Z have the tools to be champions, and have worked hard for it. If they win, they win because they deserve it.” Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista (left) and Z "The Dream" Gorres (right) pose with Golden Boy Vice-President and matchmaker Eric Gomez at the Golden Boy office in Los Angeles. This came after GBP Vice President and international matchmaker Eric Gomez observed that members of the press were impressed at watching the ending sparring of Bautista and Gorres with their respective sparmates. In fact, one of the pressmen was awed at watching Gorres dance on the ring, recalled Gomez, “Z is so impressively sharp today.” The pressmen regretted having arrived late and missed the entire sparing session of Boom-Boom and Z. It is not clear yet if the Golden Boy would be coming for the triple title match. But Gomez has confirmed earlier on that he will not miss the fight. It has been recently confirmed that the AJ Banal undercard is not to proceed as the prospective Korean opponent failed to confirm for the fight.
