UCLA CONFIRMS OMAR NINO TEST; VILORIA-SOSA UP NEXT?
By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Fri, 26 Jan 2007
A laboratory test done at the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA) has confirmed that WBC junior flyweight champion Omar Nino had indeed tested positive of metaamphetamines following his rematch with Fil-Am Brian Viloria last November 18 at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas.
Earlier, Nino was also found positive of the banned substance by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, which handed down a suspension on the Mexican fighter following the announcement of the laboratory findings.
As such, the WBC will most likely strip Omar Nino of his title, although WBC president Jose Sulaiman also announced to the press that Nino questioned the validity of the UCLA test as "he did not sign the container nor saw anyone seal it," before the samples were taken to the laboratory. Nino, according to Sulaiman, has demanded that a DNA test be done to prove that he is not guilty of the charges that he used banned substances before the fight.
With these latest developments, the WBC will also likely allow no. 1 contender Brian Viloria and no. 2 ranked Edgar Sosa to vie for the vacant title.
Omar Nino had retained the WBC title by eking out a hard-earned draw with Viloria underneath the Manny Pacquiao-Erik Morales 'Grand Finale.'
Lawyer Gary Gittelsohn, who managers Viloria, had earlier stated that they would demand that the title be awarded once against to Viloria, although they would also accept it if the WBC would rule that his ward fight the next highest rated contender in the division.
Sosa, 27, hails from Mexico City and parades a record of 26 wins, 5 losses with 14 knockout wins.
