BAUTISTA, GORRES LAND IN LOS ANGELES! By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Wed, 10 Jan 2007 WBO no. 1 superbantam Rey 'Boom Boom' Bautista and WBO no. 1 superfly Z 'The Dream' Gorres, together with their Filipino trainer Edito 'Ala' Villamor arrived in Los Angeles yesterday all poised to do their jobs as they prepare for their respective assignments on the 'World Cup" of boxing on March 4 slated in Cebu. The trio was met at the airport by a staff of Golden Boy Promotions, under the instructions of GBP vice-president and international matchmaker Eric Gomez. Cebu sportsman Antonio L. Aldeguer, who manages the two fighters, confirmed that a staff of GBP had fetched the group at the Los Angeles International Airport, and brought them to their LA apartment, which is located just a few minutes away from the Wild Card Gym. Today, Bautista and Gorres are set to report to Freddie Roach's Wild Card Gym as they start the hard grind for their upcoming world title bouts against Mexican world champions Daniel Ponce De Leon and Fernando Montiel. Prior to their departure, Bautista and Gorres had already started training at the famed ALA Gym, which was recently visited by Roach during his short stay in Cebu. The 20-year-old Bautista will challenge WBO superbantam boss Daniel Ponce De Leon, while Gorres goes up against WBO superfly champ Fernando Montiel in what is dubbed as "Philippines versus Mexico" World Cup of boxing. The event, to be co-promoted by Oscar De la Hoya and Sammy Gello-ani, will also feature another WBO world title bout featuring either Jhonny Gonzalez or Hugo Cazares defending against Gerry Penalosa or Rodel Mayol or Bert Batawang. De la Hoya and his business partners Sugar Shane Mosley and Bernard Hopkins are expected to fly into Cebu in the last week of January or early February to bring with them the $500,000 Cup, which will be awarded to the winning country.
