NBA -- Ewing poised to Bobcats assistant coach

CHICAGO -- Patrick Ewing, one of the NBA's top 50 players of all time, will be reunited with his good friend, Charlotte Bobcats owner Michael Jordan, after the ex-New York Knick great agreed in principle to be the Bobcats' assistant head coach.
Ewing will be working closely with Steve Clifford, the Bobcats new coach. The Bobcats fired Mike Dunlap after only one season where he lead the team to a dismal 21-61 record, 14 wins better than the previous year.
The 50-year old Hall of Famer also had stints with the Washigton Wizards, Houston Rockets and the Orlando Magic as an assistant coach.
Ewing, whose jersey no. 33 was retired by the New York Knicks, averaged almost 21.0 ppg, 9.8 rebounds and 2.4 bpg throughout his career. He is the only player to play 1,000 games with the Knicks and considered to be one of the greatest players in the Knicks' storied franchise.
Rich Cho, the general manager of the Bobcats, is counting on Ewing's vast experience as a premier center in the league to develop the team's frontcourt in Bismack Biyombo, B.J. Mullens and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.
Kidd-Gilchrist, the second overall pick of last year's draft showed promise after averaging 9.0 ppg and 5.8 rpg but was plagued with inconsistency throughtout the season. (JAH)
