Pistons name Maurice Cheeks head coach By John Aldwin Mahipos PhilBoxing.com Wed, 12 Jun 2013 ![]() Cheeks. CHICAGO -- Maurice Cheeks has been named head coach of the Detroit Pistons. This would be Cheeks' third shot at a head coaching job following four-year stints with the Portland Trailblazers and the Philadelphia 76ers from 2001 to 2009. The 56-year old Cheeks takes over the deposed Lawrence Frank, who was fired in April following a disappointing 2012-13 Pistons season that crashed at 29-53. Frank left Detroit with a mediocre 54-94 slate. Cheeks is facing a big challenge with the corps of players he inherited. Having traded Ben Gordon and Tayshaun Prince to the Charlotte Bobcats and Memphis Grizzlies respectively, the Pistons are rebuilding around Andre Drummond, Brandon Knight and Greg Monroe along with No. 8 pick in the 2013 NBA draft. Cheeks, who played 15 years in the NBA and won a title with the Philadelphia 76ers alongside Julius "The Doctor" Erving in 1983, was hired with the help of coaching legend Phil Jackson, a coaching consultant with the team. Widely considered as the front-runner during the Pistons' coaching hunt, Cheeks beat out former Portland and Seattle coach Nate Mcmillan, Atlanta coach Larry Drew, Phoenix Suns interim coach Lindsay Hunter, San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Mike Budenholzer and New York assistant Darrell Walker, all of whom were interviewed for the job. Cheeks brings to the table a plethora of experience not just as a successful basketball player but as an assistant coach as well. Cheeks spent three years with the Oklahoma Thunder under Scott Brooks. After working with the best 1-2 combination in the NBA in Westbrook and Durant with the Thunder, Cheeks is hoping he can bring out the best in Brandon Knight who showed promise during the 2012-2013 regular season by averaging 13.3 points and four assists per game.
