PHILIPPINES-MEXICO WORLD CUP DEFINITELY ON MARCH 4 Bautista-De Leon, Gorres-Montiel confirmed By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sun, 31 Dec 2006 Respected Cebu boxing patron Tony Aldeguer says the scheduled Philippines vs Mexico World Cup will ?definitely take place on March 4.? In a long distance telephone conversation with Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today, Aldeguer who met with WBO Asia Pacific top man Leon Panoncillo who also works closely with Golden Boy Promotions said he had conveyed the decision to Golden Boy Promotions who are partners in the World Cup project. Headlining the exciting world triple championship card will be emerging ring sensation, undefeated 20 year old Rey ?Boom Boom? Bautista (21-0, 16 KO?s) who will battle 28 year old WBO super bantamweight champion Daniel Ponce De Leon (30-1, 28 KO?s) and flashy southpaw Z ?The Dream? Gorres who will clash with Fernando Montiel in a WBO super flyweight title fight. Montiel is the reigning world champion. The 24 year old Gorres has a record of 26-1-1 with 14 KO?s while the 27 year old Montiel?s record is 32-2-1 with 24 KO?s. The only disappointment was that WBO bantamweight champion Jhonny Gonzales was not willing to fight former WBC super flyweight champion Gerry Pe?alosa in Manila claiming he feared a hometown decision. Gonzales also indicated he had more to gain in a rematch with WBC super bantamweight champion Israel Vasquez. As a result of Gonzales? decision, Aldeguer indicated they are working on a replacement WBO title fight between light flyweight champion Hugo Fidel Cazares and the Philippines Bert Batawang, the former Pan African champion. The 28 year old Cazares is a southpaw with a ring record of 24-3-1 with 18 knockouts. Batawang who is a solid puncher and an experienced fighter is coming off a first round annihilation of Rey Orais in Talisay City earlier this month in which Orais had to be taken to hospital after being knocked out cold with a cracking right hook. Batawang who is also a southpaw is 35 years old and has a ring record of 39-12-3 with 32 knockouts. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
