15-1 UNDERDOG SCORES AN UPSET AT THE PREAKNESS, NO TRIPLE CROWN WINNER FOR 2013

PhilBoxing.com

The gods in the horse world smiled today to wonderful horse named Oxbow.

The horse was tagged as a 15-1 underdog by the spin masters of the racing world. With such odds, they were expecting the horse to come in the last place.

But Oxbow who carried No. 6 on his apron and Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens had other plans.

The D. Wayne Lucas trained horse, Brad Kelly owned and Calumet Farm raised wunderkind broke off from the starting gate at the Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland and never looked back in spite of slightly losing ground at the last few meters.

Stevens guided Oxbow through every turn making sure he was running the shortest distance and at the right speed near the rails.

The top favorite, Kentucky Derby winner a horse named Orb was at 3-5. He was going for his second winning at this 138th Preakness Stakes and hopefully win the Triple Crown in three weeks at the Belmont Stakes in New York.

But Orb who runs best on the outside never got on tract from his inside most position. At ? turn it was obvious he will never make it. In fact he was running 6th at the part of the race. He ended out of the money in the 4th place.

The payoff for Oxbow was $32.80 for win, $12.00 for place and $6.60 for show.

The runner up, No. 9 Itsmyluckyday paid $7.80 for place and $5.00 for show.

Horse No. 5 MyLute, came in third and paid $5.20 for show

A $2.00 exacta for Horses6-9 paid $301.40
A $1.00 trifecta for Horses 6-9-5 paid $1030.80
A $100 superfecta for horses 6-9-5-1 paid $1817.80.

So with the upset, there will be no Triple Crown winner this year.

A horse named Affirmed of the Harbor View Farms and with jockey Steve Culthen aboard won it last in 1978.
