Oklahoma Outplays LA Lakers, 119-110; Arrests Skid to Hold on to League Lead

PhilBoxing.com

League leader Oklahoma City Thunder outclassed the short-handed Los Angeles Lakers, 119-110 to stop another losing Skid and Hold on to the top standing as the current NBA season enters its last trimester.

With leader and top scorer Shai Gilgeous Alexander still out with abdominal injury, the Thunder relied on his partner Jaylen Williams who scored 23 points to pace OKC. Williams was hounded by the Lakers tough, fouling defense and hit just 6 of 17 shots from the floor, including none from the trifecta zone. He managed however to sink 16 of 18 from the charity lane.

What helped Williams was the surprising accurate shooting of defensive big guard Alex Caruso who hit 7-8 from the field including 3 of 4 from the three points land. Caruso finished with 17 points.

Also boosting the Thunder was the continuing fine play of its big men, particularly seven-footers Chet Holmgren and Isaiah Hertenstein with Holmgren playing as power forward Jaylin Williams who is nearly seven foot, also came off the bench to provide breathing spell for either and maintain the pressure on the painted area.

Shooting guards Isaiah Joe and Cam Wallace provided their usual scoring support.

Without main top scorer Luka Doncic who was out with ACL injury, Lebron James tried to rally the Lakers with DeAndre Ayton and Jaxson Hayes attempting to match the output of Holmgren and Hertenstein.

Though trailing for most parts, the Lakers managed to keep the game close. But they lost steam towards the end allowing OKC to pull away with plenty to spare.

The win stopped OKC's recent two games losing skein against Western Conference rivals San Antonio Spurs and the Houston Rockets. OKC previously had back to back losses in the East against Indiana and Toronto.

As it is, both OKC and Eastern Conference leader Detroit Pistons have 13 losses so far but the Thunder managed to keep overall top standing with more wins, 41 to 39.

The Thunder will try to stretch the win margin as it takes on the Phoenix Suns tomorrow.
