Ana Julaton Win a Close One at the 2006 West Wind Challenge
By Ed de la Vega, DDS PhilBoxing.com Tue, 12 Dec 2006
Ana “The Hurricane” Julaton, the pride of the Box Fu Gym in Berkeley, California today won the 2006 West Wind Challenge held in her home gym before an adoring sell out crowd some of whom came from distant places just to see her fight.
Julaton fought a very good and extremely determined fighter in Teresa “Tree” O’Toole, a four time former US National Champion and a representative to the Pan Am and World Games. O’Toole is also a three time PAL National Boxing Champion and a professional stuntwoman.
The five round fight was very close from the get go with both fighters landing telling blows on each other. However, living up to her moniker, the “Hurricane”, Julaton upon the urging of her handler, Angeleo Reyes, from round three, increased the tempo of the fight and threw more punches than O’Toole. O’Toole desperately kept pace with her, delivering occasional telling left and right crosses several times to keep the score very close. Julaton in the end pulled out the win by landing more power punches towards the end of round 5. The judges score were so close separating Julaton from O’Toole by a mere point.
Julaton’s victory, albeit a very close call was loudly applauded by the home crowd. It also increased her chances of being to be part of the fight card scheduled in Boracay during the GAB-sponsored Women’s International Boxing Convention on Jan 21-25, 2006.
Ana Julaton is raised by his cornerman after the fight.
