Junmar ?El Toro? Emon Wins By Split Decision Over Jeremy Abbott

PhilBoxing.com

Last night we saw a different Jeremy ?Showtime? Abbott, he was leaner, quicker and in the best condition he has been. He came to the scales very confident and on course with the contractual weight of 147lbs. You can tell from the look in his eyes that his body and mind has been rejuvenated from the devastating loss he encountered last year at the hands of Ghislain Maduma.

The Filipino influence within Jeremy Abbott?s training camp has paid dividends as the well schooled young Coach Vince Sarria employed the world class strength and conditioning he has learned from his mentor Coach Socrates Celestial.

Junmar Emon who does his own strength and conditioning was not as successful with meeting the contractual weight, he weighed in overweight at 152.2lbs. Although Emon has been busy fighting, it has been a challenge for him to lose some muscle mass, he has a natural muscular physique that gains weight quickly. Although Junmar Emon had to give up a percentage of his purse for coming overweight, Jeremy ?Showtime? Abbott agreed to make the variance in weight but putting on a little more weight in an hours time after weigh in.

From the opening round Junmar ?El Toro? Emon attacked Jeremy ?Showtime? Abbott like a mad bull with bad intentions ready to skewer the matador with his horns. Emon lunged in many times and connected on Abbott from angles that he could not see from. Emon threw a fast right hook that landed on Abbott?s chin that sent him to the canvas in the middle of the first round. The knockdown served as a wake up call to Abbott who respected Emon?s power and continued to fight on with more caution.

Jeremy Abbott answered back with a few of his punches when he found the opening with unconventional hooks that were thrown on the much shorter Emon. Abbott was able to connect with several big punches on Emon throughout the six rounds, Emon commented that he took everything Abbott could dish out. Coach Sarria commentated that Abbott hands were down too often which is the reason Emon caught him with his leading left hand. They had a game plan to keep jabbing to keep Emon on the outside and counter his attacks.

As the fight went deeper Abbott didn?t utilize his height and reach advantage as the fight went on, he didn?t throw the jab enough times to keep the lunging ?El Toro? at bay. Emon was able to make his way in and inflict damage on the inside and from angles throughout the fight. Abbott?s ability to slip and exercise caution kept this fight on track to it?s climax.

Emon vs. Abbott was full of action that pleased the fans which were composed of corporate executives and boxing personalities in attendance at the luxurious Ritz Carlton Ballroom. Emon?s pressure forced Abbott to fight toe to toe where bunches of punches were exchanged back and forth. The climax of the fight was reached in the latter 2 rounds were bloodied Emon turned up the his punching volume on Abbott against the ropes at several occasions.

At the end of six rounds, the judges awarded the victory to Junmar Emon by split decision 55-54, 57-56. One of the judges scored 58-57 for Jeremy Abbott. Junmar Emon hurt his knuckles from the right punch that took down Jeremy Abbott in the first round, he continued to fight on with one good hand. Emon also sustained a deep cut from a couple of accidental head butts which required stitches after the fight. Emon?s manager/coach Richard Souce commented that they were able to stick with their game plan, unfortunately Junmar hurt his hand with the first big punch that he landed.

Jeremy Abbott finished the fight with his chin up without any injuries. Although Emon edged him out with a split decision, the durable Abbott is back in the ring, he boxed better and demonstrated that he is great physical condition under the young Filipino Canadian Coach Vince Sarria.

Writers Note: Happy Birthday to our good friend Referee Rocky Zolnierczyk who was the third man in the ring last night between Junmar Emon and Jeremy Abbott. Rocky was also the referee for Marvin Sonsona at both occasions when he fought in Canada in addition to being the referee for Ana Julaton and Lisa Brown.
