Roman Martinez and Juan Carlos Burgos duels to a Split Draw
By Rich Mazon PhilBoxing.com Sun, 20 Jan 2013
New York, NY ? Mexican challenger Juan Carlos Burgos (30-1, 20 KOs) and WBO Super Featherweight (130 pound) Champion, Roman Martinez (26-1-1, 16 KOs) of Vega Baja, Puerto Rico squared off in a punishing twelve round title fight that resulted in a Split Draw for the two fighters.
Burgos, 25, of Tijuana, Mexico brought the action to the defending champion with unrelenting body attack in the first installment of a triple championship card at the Theatre at Madison Square Garden in New York. He then followed that with shots to Martinez?s head which the champ gamely took.
On the other end, Martinez, 29, preferred to issue work upstairs where he spent most of the time and his energy on throughout the fight. Martinez equaled Burgos? body attack with his head shots.
Burgos connected with 36% of his total punches (286 of 805) while the champ had a 23% (193 of 827) accuracy of his own.
But the biggest difference of the final punch statistics was in the power punching category where Burgos edged his counterpart. The challenger was the busier and harder hitting of the two fighters who landed almost half of his power shots.
Burgos hit Martinez with 234 out of 507 thrown power shots while the defending champion landed only 28 % of the said shots, 164 of 576.
The judges at ringside were divided on what they saw, with two of them seeing a different winner. A third judge had the fight even at the end of the 12 round title fight.
Judge Waleska Roldan scored it 117-111 for Burgos, Judge Tony Paollilo has it 116-112 for Martinez and Judge John Signorile has an even 114 card for both.
Martinez retains his belt with the draw.
