DRIAN FRANCISCO?S LOS ANGELES TALE By Ed de la Vega, DDS PhilBoxing.com Thu, 15 Nov 2012 ![]() Drian Francisco, the wunderkind from Sablayan, Mindoro was sent to Los Angeles to search for ?the green pasture. Just like any new kid in town, he is having a hell of a time finding it. It could have been the other way around if he had better support from the folks back home that sent him to LA on the first place. But, sadly that is not the case. He is alone by himself relying on people he barely knows to get around the big City. But much to his credit he manages the best way he can. For instance, today, he was driven to the doctor for the obligatory medical exams. He was accompanied by a friend of his trainer, Justin Fortune. The doctor?s verdict? He is fit to fight! I had a chance to see him for a quick visit late in the afternoon after he returned from the doctor?s office and I am glad to report that Francisco appears to be in very good shape. ?Handa na po tayo (we are ready)," he said. But he and Fortune are a little disturbed because no one from the promotions has informed them of the vital schedules. For example, as of this afternoon (Wednesday LA Time) the two are still totally clueless as to where the weigh-in will be, let alone the time. Luckily, I was sent an e-mail by the media people with Zanfer Promotions advising me that the weigh-in for the Viloria-Marquez fight card will be at the Biltmore Hotel in downtown LA this Friday. But the time is yet to be determined. So now at least they know the place but they still have to wait to be informed of the time. I have not talked to Francisco about this issue of being sent alone to Los Angeles so admittedly, I do not know his whole story. But from what I saw, I think being alone is a huge distraction for him. How I wished he had his handlers the whole time he was training for his fight. That would have been a tremendous moral support. If it were not for some people he knows from his hometown who are now living in LA and who gave him food and shelter, I am sure the distraction will be even more. Francisco informed me that his manager will be arriving on Thursday (LA Time) and perhaps by that time he will get more information about his fight as he is expecting his manager to be in touch with the Zanfer Promotions people. Perhaps by that time he will also have a chance to see and sign his fight contract. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ed de la Vega, DDS. ![]() |
