DONAIRE-NISHIOKA / RIOS-ALVARADO: COMPLETE FIGHT REPORT WITH PHOTOS

PhilBoxing.com

Carson CA:- After everything was said and done, it turned out that the much publicized and overly hyped WBC ex-champion, Toshiaki Nishioka of Japan (39-5-3, 24KO) was a dud.

Nishioka, fighting before a sell out crowd at the Home Depot Center in this city many of whom are from his country, was so tentative and seemingly too cautious perhaps afraid of the famous power of Nonito Donaire Jr of San Leandro, CA.

The fight between the two time-tested warriors started very slowly. It was so slow and tactical that the crowd started to boo. They came for blood but up to round 6 they got nothing but a dance.

In the 6th, Donaire 30-1-0, 19KO) finally got his punches in and the Japanese ended up in his butt on the canvas. He beat the count but from there it was only a matter of time. Eventually, in the ninth, referee Raul Cais Sr., stepped in to stop the fight as it was obvious after another knockdown the Japanese pug was ready to call it a day and hightail it back to Tokyo.

Stats show that the Filipino Flash clearly dominated the aging ex-champion. Donaire threw 246 power punches vs. 87 from Nishioka. He landed 111 of them while Nishioka a paltry 26. Clearly, it was a no win situation for Nishioka and Cais in stopping the fight saved him from further harm.

In the supporting main event, Brandon Rios (31-0-1, 22KO) of Oxnard stopped a very tough Mike Alvarado (33-1-0,23KO) of Denver, Colorado to win the WBO Latino Super lightweight belt.

The fight was all that was branded to be. It was a war from the first bell with both fighters giving all they got and exchanging bombs all the three minutes of every round allowing the crowd to get what they came for.

In the 7th Rios landed devastating overhand shots that snapped back the head of Alvarado. After a few of those shots, Referee Pat Russell decided that Alvarado had enough and stopped the fight at 1:57 of the round.

Other fight results:

Saul Rodriguez of Riverside, CA (6-0-1, 5KO) and Cesar Garcia of Ensenada Mexico (6-12-1-1) fought to a technical draw on account of a cut on Garcia due an accidental head butt. The fight did not go past round 4.
