Las Vegas, NV - Mexican- American challenger Roberto Marroquin 22-1 (15 KOs) started fast and strong and jumped on Guillermo Rigondeaux right away in the initial round of their championship bout. He landed a strong right on his opponent which caught Rigondeaux and the crowd's attention.
But Rigondeaux, who is the WBA Super Bantam Champ adjusted successfully and quickly to his opponent's aggression . He used his effective jabbing and accurate punching to thwart Marroquin's advances.
Rigondeaux landed a left hook on his foe in the 5th round which forced Marroquin's knee to touched the canvass. Marroquin answered the 8th count given to him by Referee Robert Byrd. The Cuban gold medalist in boxing then continued his masterful performance by taking the succeeding rounds with accurate punching and good ring movement.
Marroquin came back aggressive in the 9th as he almost floored the defending champion with a two punch combo. Marroquin hit Rigondeaux with a right to the body and a left hook that pushed back the Cuban to the corner post.
Rigondeaux dropped Marroquin for the second time in the 12th and final round with a right hand. The bloodied challenger once again got up and answered the count but was unable to put up a good effort from then on.
Rigondeaux wins with a Unanimous Decision Victory with scores of 118-108 all across the scoring sheets and successfully defended his WBA belt in the process.
