BRONER WINS AN EMPTY VICTORY OVER ESCOBEDO
By Ed de la Vega, DDS PhilBoxing.com Sun, 22 Jul 2012
In a fight in Cincinnati, Ohio that almost did not happen, local boy Adrien Broner scored a victory over Vicente Escobedo of Woodland, CA.
Watching both fighters before the first bell rung, it was obvious that Broner was a lot bigger than Escobedo.
In fact, he was way too big even at the weigh-in yesterday. Something like 3.5 pounds!
With the weight advantage and obviously the speed plus the Mayweather style of defense Escobedo from the beginning was already at a disadvantage.
As a ?boxer? his style could not match up easily with the ?slugger? style of Broner. And even early in the fight, the results were obvious. Broner won all the rounds in the first quarter of the fight.
In round 5, Escobedo started to bleed from the nose and his mouth. At that stage, Broner finally started to walk Escobedo to the ropes and hit him as at will.
Finally with Escobedo unable to fight back, Escobedo?s corner came in and waved the towel. It took the referee a few seconds more before he stepped in and waived off the fight. Time: 2:42 round No. 5.
Although Broner won a spectacular win in the eyes of many, his victory is empty.
He did not win the title.
Winning a fight without winning a title is indeed fitting for a boxer who is unprofessional and who disrespected the boxing world by coming overweight
But as a compensation, he got to get his hair brushed by his girl friend before national TV.
