MERCADO READY TO DETHRONE SONSONA

Cebu-based Jerope 'Nino De Oro' Mercado of the Wakee Salud Stable feels all the hard work is behind him, and what's in front of him is the task of dethroning Philippine superfly champion Eden Sonsona this Saturday at the Mandaue City Sports and Cultural Complex.
The Cagayan de Oro-raised Mercado will challenge Sonsona in the co-featured bout which topbills Randy Suico taking on Thailand's Pongpetch Chuwatana for the vacant OPBF lightweight title.
"Mercado-Sonsona is a match-up of two unbeaten upstarts," said promoter Rex 'Wakee' Salud, who is putting up the event. "Expect these two fighters to be all over each other when they collide," he added.
The 26-year-old Mercado is undefeated in 10 fights with 1 draw and 4 knockouts, while the General Santos City-raised Sonsona also boasts of an unblemished record of nine wins with only 1 knockout victory.
"We have already done everything to prepare him in the gym. It's now up to Jerope to win this fight," informed trainer Juanito Ablaca in an exclusive interview at the Wakee Salud gym.
Sonsona's trainer-father, Boy Samson, in a separate interview in Manila, also divulged that his son has been preparing well for Mercado, and pointed out the latter's lack of experience compared to his son who has been fighting since childhood.
"My son has been sparring against much-bigger boys at the Wild Card Gym in Manila. We are ready for Mr. Mercado," said Samson, himself a former fighter who once beat ex-world champ Luisito Espinosa.
Meanwhile, Thailand's Pongpetch Chuwatana arrived in Cebu last night accompanied by his manager and Thai judge Pinit Prayadsab from Bangkok.
The hard-hitting Chuwatana, in his arrival speech, declared that he will match Suico's power with Bangkok-made power, and he will do to Suico what WBA champ Juan Diaz had done to the local boy.
