La Guerra: Wilfredo Vasquez Jr vs Rafael Marquez August 4 in Puerto Rico By Carlos Costa PhilBoxing.com Fri, 15 Jun 2012 A War has been confirmed. Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. of Puerto Rico, and Mexico's Rafael Marquez will clash in the main event of a card promoted as "La Guerra" (The War) to be staged August 4 at the Coliseo Rub?n Rodr?guez in Bayam?n, Puerto Rico. "Everything has been agreed upon. Team Marquez has already signed the contracts and its confirmed that the fight will take place in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. This big fight between Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. and Rafael Marquez, is a fight between great Mexico and Puerto Rico fighters, a battle of two former world champions battling to position themselves for a shot at a world title," said Peter Rivera, vice president of Puerto Rico Best Boxing Promotions (PRBBP). 27-year-old Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. (21-2-1, 18 KOs), a former super bantamweight world champion with legions of fans in "La Isla del Encanto" ("The Island of Enchantment," as Puerto Rico is known), is son of 3-division world champion Wilfredo Vasquez Sr, one of the most popular world champions born in Puerto Rico. Currently, Vasquez is one of the three most popular Puerto Rican fighters. The other two Puerto Rican idols are 3-division world champion Miguel Angel Cotto (37-3, 30KO's) and suspended former world champion Juan Manuel "Juanma" Lopez (31-2, 28KO's). Meanwhile Rafael Marquez 41-7, 37 KOs (younger brother of legendary 3-division world champion Juan Manuel "Dinamita" Marquez), is the former IBF bantamweight king as well as former WBC super bantamweight world champion who is being prepared for this fight by legendary Mexican trainer don Ignacio "Nacho" Beristain, who also trains Rafael's his elder brother, Juan Manuel. Rafael Marquez is well-remembered for his four epic battles against fellow Mexican Israel "El Magn?fico" Vasquez, wars of power, skills and will that thrilled fans around the world. "We will show to fans a great event so next week we bring Rafael Marquez to Puerto Rico for an exciting press conference, which will officially launch the promotion," shared Rivera. Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. called by his fans and fellow Boricuas as "Papito," comes from a split decision lost to the "Filipino Flash" Nonito Donaire Jr. last February in San Antonio, a very competitive combat in which one of the judges, Dr. Ruben Garcia, saw Vasquez winning; while "Rafa" Marquez knocked Eric Aiken in round one last month in Tijuana. Currently Vazquez Jr. is rated # 7 at the super bantamweight pounds division while Marquez is the fifth-ranked. "La Guerra" between Vasquez-Marquez is a promotion of Puerto Rico's Best Boxing Promotions (PRBBP) in association with All Star Boxing, Zanfer and Top Rank and will be broadcast on PPV. Tickets for the "La Guerra" between Wilfredo Vasquez Jr. and Rafael Marquez will go on sale from tomorrow. Prices are $ 20, $ 40, $ 75, $ 125 and $ 250.
