PHILIPPINE RING OFFICIALS FORM NEW ASSOCIATION PhilBoxing.com Sat, 05 May 2012 Last April 29, the 1st General Assembly of the Association of Philippine Professional Boxing Ring Officials (APPBRO) Luzon Chapter, Inc. was held at the Roofdeck of Lourdes Suites, Makati City. It was a whole day event with the Event Theme: "MAKING THE PHILIPPINE RING OFFICIALS WORLD CLASS". In the morning session, the Certificate of Incorporation issued by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) which granted the APPBRO with a legal corporate personality was presented to all the attendees. Then, the Mission/Vision of the group was discussed as well as the short-term and long-term plans and programs. In the afternoon session, there was a short lecture on the history of boxing and how it evolved into what it is today, a lecture on Judging and Refereeing with an enlightening open forum as the final part of the agenda. The event ended with the unveiling of the new set of uniforms of Filipino ring officials. APPBRO was organized primarily to improve the skills, knowledge and judgment of judges and referees of professional boxing in the Philippines. According to inaugural President and Internationally-acclaimed referee and judge Silvestre Abainza, "As our Filipino boxers and promoters are now recognized by the whole world as world-class and world title fights happen more often here in the Philippines than any time in recent history, we, Filipino ring officials should cope up with this development and become world-class ourselves." The morning session started with the Opening Remarks by the President followed by presentation of the Certificate of Incorporation issued by the Philippine Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) granting juridical personality to the association by boxing judge Salvador Lopez. Then, the Mission of the APPBRO was explained by ring judge Elmer Lopez and the Vision shared by Engr. Greg Ortega, also a boxing judge followed by the Plans and Programs presented by Elmer Lopez. Lunch was then served. In the afternoon session, Engr. Greg Ortega guided the group in a trip to memory lane narrating the history of boxing from the bare knuckle beginning and how it evolved into what it is today. This was followed by a lecture on judging by boxing referee and judge, Atty. Danrex Tapdasan. The outline of Atty.Tapdasan's lecture was: 1. Basic Criteria for Judging, 2. Dynamics and Important Tips of Scoring, 3. "Proper Preparation Promotes Perfect Performance", and 4. Ring Officials' Code of Ethics and Professionalism. At the end of Atty. Tapdasan's talk, he reminded his fellow ring officials that the most important characters in a boxing contest are the boxers themselves. Hence, officials must maintain their integrity and consistency in making decisions as one wrong move may destroy a boxer's life. Then, it was Abainza's turn to lecture on the rules and dynamics of refereeing a professional boxing fight. He shared his valuable experiences as a boxing referee way back in 1985. From the basic rules to be followed by a referee to the most complicated scenarios, Abainza explained them all with precision and accuracy. After the lectures, the open forum followed. The interaction between the attendees about the rules were very much enlightening. Atty. Epifanio Almeda, another ring judge, then moved that the 1st APPBRO General Assembly will be formally called to order. It was duly seconded and the President presided over the session. Atty. Almeda then proposed the passage of a Board Resolution to improve the accuracy of scoring a boxing match. The last part of the event was the presentation of the new set of uniforms to be worn by all Filipino ring officials with identical cloth, tailoring shop and the new patches attached therein. A day after the above-mentioned event, APPBRO President Ver Abainza made a courtesy call and official report to the main office of the Games and Amusement Board (GAB) at Makati City, Philippines. Abainza met with Commissioner Matthew Gaston and Boxing Chief Dr. Nasser Cruz. All three agreed that officiating in boxing fights should continue to improve and evolve through the changing times. The GAB committed to support the plan and programs of APPBRO and the latter also promised to be GAB's main partner in ensuring fair and competent decisions in boxing contests. |
