17-Year-Old Boxer Shines in Baguio Match-Up PhilBoxing.com Sun, 29 Apr 2012 Baguio City - Boxers from the Southern Philippines scored six wins against one loss in the North Versus South Match Up at the CCDC Gymnasium in La Trinidad, Benguet Saturday but it was the performance of a 5' 10" tall 17-year-old lightweight which stole the show and the admiration of the boxing crowd which included Hall of Fame Trainer Freddie Roach and former world junior welterweight champion Amir Khan. The towering Roskie Cristobal of Pres. Roxas, North Cotabato, a product of the grassroots boxing program started by former Gov. Manny Pinol, stunned the crowd as he used his speed and longer reach to pummel an older Juvy Dayandayan knocking the latter out seconds into the first round of a scheduled four-round bout. Referee Sammy Bernabe waved off the fight at 35 seconds of the first round after Cristobal connected with powerful combinations to the head and body of Dayandayan resulting in a knockdown and a bloodied nose. It was Cristobal's third first round knockout in three professional fights submitting a record of 3 wins with 3 KOs as a 17-year-old pro boxer. "He really has the power," Roach said as he joined the crowd in applauding the spectacular performance of the young boxer from the South. In two ten round bouts, former WBC flyweight champion Edrin "The Sting" Dapudong floored veteran Dondon Jimenea with a crisp left hook in the first round and dominated the fight to win by Unanimous Decision while junior featherweight Rolando Magbanua, fighting with an injured right elbow, outpointed the powerful and rugged Rene Manlapaz to win by Unanimous decision in 10 rounds. Another bright prospect of the Braveheart Boxing Club of North Cotabato which carried the banner of the South in the La Trinidad boxing match up, 19-year-old Joemer Lumacad displayed outstanding boxing skills in the first three rounds of a scheduled six against Gilbert Donasales but faded towards the finishing rounds eking out a Majority Decision victory.
