North Versus South Clash In Baguio City Boxing Event

PhilBoxing.com

Baguio City - It will be an encounter between fighters from the North and the South when a nine-bout boxing card unfolds Saturday night at the Cordillera Career Development College (CCDC) Gymnasium in La Trinidad, Benguet.

Leading the list of boxers from Mindanao is former WBC silver flyweight champion Edrin "The Sting" Dapudong, 27, who is going up against Dondon Jimenea of La Trinidad, Benguet in a 10-round non-title fight.

Dapudong is hoping to score a convincing victory in front of a boxing crowd that is expected to include Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao, British fighter Amir Khan and Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach to boost his chances of getting another crack at the world flyweight title.

Another 10 round bout features Rolando Magbanua of North Cotabato against Manila's Rene Manlapaz in a battle of the junior featherweights.

Three 8-round bouts will pit North Cotabato's Ronnie Apilado against Dexter Mendoza of Manila in a junior featherweight fight; North Cotabato's Rey Juntilla versus Benjie Sunganob of Manila; and Ryan Rae Ponteras of Agusan del Sur versus Julius Agcopra, also of Manila.

A lone 6-round bout will feature the talented former amateur standout Joemer Lumacad, 19 years old, against Gilbert Donasales of Baguio City.

Three 4-round encounters will showcase North Cotabato's undefeated junior lightweights called the "Triple Towers of Power" - Roskie Cristobal, 17 years old and 5' 10" tall; Rugen Mamayog, 21 and 5' 9 1/2" tall; and Louie Yonting, 21 and standing 5' 9".

Cristobal (2 wins, 2 KOs) fights Juvy Dayandayan of Manila, Mamayog (2 wins 2 KOs) goes up against Ireneo Galindez of Manila while Yonting (3 wins, 2 KOs) meets Jeffrey Dumaguit.

The bouts, staged by Baguio City promoter Raffy Panagan along with former North Cotabato Gov. Manny Pinol of the Braveheart Boxing Club, will be covered by GMA Channel 7 with veteran sports commentator Chino Trinidad handling the coverage.

Benguet Gov. Nestor Fongwan, former Cong. Rocky Molintas, Cebu businessmen Rex Wakee Salud and Harold Cuevas and members of the Team Pacquiao currently training in Baguio are expected to be at ringside to watch the fights.

The fights start at 6 p.m.
