Roach Scouts For New Boxing Talents PhilBoxing.com Thu, 26 Apr 2012 Baguio City - Hall of Fame boxing trainer Freddie Roach and Benguet Governor Nestor Fongwan will lead a long list of big names in the sport who will troop to the Cordillera Career Dev. College (CCDC) Gym in La Trinidad, Benguet on Saturday to watch some of the bright boxing prospects from Mindanao battle veteran fighters from Luzon. Cebu businessman Rex Wakee Salud who is in Baguio City with his businessman-friend Harold Cuevas of North Cotabato said he will ask Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao and British fighter Amir Khan to join him in watching "Great Fights At The Heights: North vs. South" which is staged by veteran boxing man Raffy Panagan and covered by GMA Channel 7. But while many will be at the CCDC "to see the fights," Coach Freddie Roach will be there to "watch the fighters." At the Coyeesan High Altitude Training Gym Wednesday, Roach told former North Cotabato Governor Manny Pinol, whose nine boxers will carry the banner of the "South" that he would like to watch the young fighters from Mindanao and assess who among them has the potential of taking over the Philippine boxing torch when Pacquiao retires. Roach said he would like to take a look at the 27-year-old Edrin "The Sting" Dapudong, the former WBC Silver Flyweight champion, who is going up against the veteran Dondon Jimenea of La Trinidad, Benguet. "If he could move his head a little more and make lateral movements, he would be good," said Roach of Dapudong who last year lost in his bid for the WBA flyweight title against Hernan Marquez in Mexico. But the focus of Roach's attention would be the 19-year-old bantamweight Joemer Lumacad, 5' 6" tall, who is considered as the most naturally talented fighter from the Braveheart Boxing Club of North Cotabato owned by the Pinol brothers. Lumacad, a southpaw who turned pro at 17, is a former Palarong Pambansa gold medallist who now holds a record of 8 wins with one decision loss. Also in Roach's assessment list are Braveheart Boxing's three "Towers of Power" Louie Yonting, Rugen Mamayog and Roskie Cristobal, young junior lightweights who are all undefeated in their pro career. Yonting, 21, is 5' 9" and has a record of 3 wins with 2 KOs, Mamayog, 21, is 5' 9 1/2" a high school student who won his first two bouts by KO while Cristobal, 17, a southpaw is 5' 10" tall and has knocked out his first two opponents as a pro all in the first round. "These boys will grow big and even become welterweights," Roach said of the "Towers of Power." Other fighters from the "South" who will see action on Saturday include junior featherweight Rolando Magbanua, junior featherweight Ronnie Apilado, featherweight Rey Juntilla and flyweight Ryan Rae Ponteras. Roach said there is a need to identify to talents to keep the boxing flame burning in the Philippines with the expected retirement of Congressman Pacquiao. The Hall of Fame trainer has already signed up featherweight Lorenzo "Thunderbolt" Villanueva, 26, also from North Cotabato. Villanueva, who holds a record of 24 wins with 23 knockouts, will fight Indonesia's Daud Cino Yordan on May 5 in Singapore for the vacant IBO featherweight title. "I am sure we could find for boxing talents in the Philippines," Roach said. Photo: Edrin Dapudong (R) with Roach in Baguio. |
