IM YAP SHARES LEAD IN BRUNEI CAMPOMANES MEMORIAL GRANDMASTER OPEN CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP

FILIPINO International Master (IM) Kim Steven Yap defeated IM Dinesh K Sharma of India in the 5th round then split the point with GM Marat Dzhumaev of Uzbekistan in the 6th round to share the lead with 3 others in the Brunei Campomanes Memorial Grandmaster Open Chess Championships 2012 on Tuesday in Brunei.
This hiked Yap?s total score to 4.5 points to join 3 other chess players in the lead.
Other players with scores identical to Yap?s are GM Dzhumaev and GM Tahir Vakhidov of Uzbekistan and FM Pitra Andika of Indonesia.
Currently, the Cebuano ace Yap has a 2449 tournament performance rating and could improve if he will perform better against FM Andika in Round 7.
The son of the Singapore-based International Arbiter/Fide Instructor Linkee Yap is eyeing his first GM norm in the $10,000 total pot prize competition held in honor of the former Filipino Fide President Florencio "Pocamps" Campomanes.
Other Filipino players competing are GM Oliver Barbosa of Taytay, Rizal, GM Richard Bitoon of Medellin, Cebu, IM Oliver Dimakiling of Davao City and FM Mari Joseph Turqueza of Quezon City.
Barbosa (ELO 2585), the tournament top seed, have 4 points, the same output of Bitoon, Dimakiling and Turqueza.
In other matches saw, Barbosa beat Fong Yit San of Malaysia and FM Yee Soon Wei of Brunei, respectively. Bitoon, meantime halved the point with Yeoh Li Tian of Malaysia then subdued Zulkipli Zaidan of Malaysia, Dimakiling lost to FM Andika but bounced back after beating IM Mas Hafizulhelmi of Malaysia while Turqueza nipped Lee William Kah Howe of Malaysia then drew with IM Jakhongir Vakhidov of Uzbekistan.
Their trip to Brunei is supported by National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) under the leadership of it's chairman/president Prospero "Butch" Pichay Jr., Cebuano chess patron Boogie Lim of Rose Pharmacy, the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC).
