Amonsot out-points Reyes in Vegas
By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Sun, 14 May 2006
World Boxing Organization Asia Pacific super-featherweight boss Czar Amonsot bucked a first-round knockdown to land the heavier and more accurate punches on Puerto Rican Jose Reyes to score a unanimous decision win yesterday in the main event of a Guilty Promotions card at the Orleans Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
Amonsot was caught by a shot in the dying seconds of the opening round that sent him on all fours, but went on to dominate most of the remaining rounds en route to a 96-93, 96-93, 95-94 decision.
The Tagbilaran City native, however, was penalized a point due to a shot way too south of the border in the middle round, said Dr. Ed De la Vega, reporting from ringside. De la Vega had designed the custom-made mouthpiece worn by Amonsot, which allowed the latter excellent breathing space as well as tough mouth protection from the blows all throughout the bout.
The win improved Amonsot's record to 16-1-1 with 10 knockouts, and lines him up for a possible defense of his title in Tagbilaran City in his next fight.
In the co-featured tenner, Along Denoy of Candijay, Bohol was looking to cruise to an easy win over Esau Gaona before a freak clash of heads opened a cut on the latter in the second round.
The fight had to be stopped 15 seconds gone in the fourth due to the cut, and under the Nevada rules, the fight was declared a no-contest.
