Dapudong Impresses Mexican Boxing Fans PhilBoxing.com Wed, 29 Jun 2011 ![]() Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico - World flyweight title challenger Edrin "The Sting" Dapudong arrived in this city in the midst of a Mexican desert early today, Tuesday June 28, after a long and circuitous journey from the Philippines that took over 48 hours. In spite of the long trip, however, Dapudong, who turned 25 on the day he left the Philippines, appeared hardly affected and after a long rest, jogged and exercised for about an hour. He later joined the defending World Boxing Association (WBA) flyweight champion Hernan "Tyson" Marquez in a public autograph signing in the city square where Mexican boxing fans were given the opportunity to size up both fighters. Mexican boxing fans gathered around the dais where the two fighters signed authographs immediately noticed the disparity in height between the champion and the challenger, with the Filipino fighter enjoying about 2 to 3 inches advantage in height. "This Filipino has the frame of a featherweight," commented an elderly Mexican boxing fan. Another noticed that while the champion showed a lot of scars in his eyebrows, Dapudong, who is actually three years older than the Mexican, had an unmarked face even after 25 professional fights and a long stint in the amateur ranks as member of the North Cotabato amateur boxing team. But while Dapudong appears to have the advantage in height and reach, his team which includes ALA Boxing vice president Dennis Canete, boxing manager Manny Pinol and trainer Bruce Lerio, has expressed concern over the vaunted power of the Mexican champion who has scored 24 knockouts in his 30 wins. Another concern of the Filipino challenger's group is the searing desert heat which could easily dehydrate Dapudong. Early today, before the one hour exercise, Dapudong weighed 116 lbs. but immediately went down to 114.4 after training. This prompted Lerio to give the Filipino challenger a little more liquid to avoid dehydration. Dapudong, whose fight record in Mexico is 1 win, over Jesus Jimenez whom he knocked out in the 1st round in June 2010, and 1 loss, to Wilbert Uicab who outpointed him in 12 rounds in September 2010, however, said that he felt better today than when the last time he was in Cancun. He is expected to enter the ring as an underdog against Marquez but Dapudong, as in his previous important fights, always has a little surprise reserved for his opponents in the ring.
