Ratner, experts awed by Gorres' skills PhilBoxing.com Sun, 12 Mar 2006 It reeks of irony when heaps of accolades are thrown the way of the flashy Z “The Dream” Gorres, the self-effacing 22-year old prizefighter yet he remains underrated and continues to strive in the shadow of his more illustrious stablemate, Rey ‘Boom-Boom’ Bautista. It wont be long, however, before Gorres proves his true worth and earn the respect of his critics when he climbs the ring on March 18, 2006 at the Mandaue City Sports Complex to vie for the vacant OPBF Super Flyweight championship. While there are not a few doubting Thomases on Gorres’ potentials, they pale in comparison to those who are smitten by his skills and talents as exemplified by the observations of some boxing experts. Gorres delivers an uppercut to the chin of Mexican Jose Alfredo Tirado during Gorres' last outing in Las Vegas. Marc Ratner, head of the Nevada State Athletic Commission who supervised Gorres' fight at the Orleans Casino in Las Vegas against Jose Alfredto Tirado, told boxing scribe Salven Lagumbay in an email that he was impressed by the virtuoso performance of the young Cebuano. Well-known former two time world champion and Trainer of the Year Buddy McGirt predicted in an interview with VIVA Sports that Gorres had what it takes to become a world champion. Fight News boxing writer, Mike Sloan said that Gorres “appears to be a threat” in the Super Flyweight division. Freddie Roach of the famed Wild Card Gym who trains Gorres is confident that Gorres will have an excellent future. Philippine Star columnist, Quinito Henson wrote that former PBA Commissioner and eminent lawyer Rudy Salud who co-manages Gorres with Tony Aldeguer said Gorres is probably the most skilled Filipino fighter today. “Gorres is a magnificent fighter,” is what Tony Martin, former Cebu resident, who was at the corner of Gorres in Las Vegas together with Freddie Roach said after the latter easily out pointed Mexican journeyman Jose Alfredo Tirado. When everything is said and done, what matters most is how Gorres will let his fists do the talking to disprove his critics and make true of the boxing experts’ praises when he climbs the ring this March 18 against the tough Thai puncher, Waengpetch Chuwatana. Will the young and amiable Gorres realize his dream of finally acquiring a championship belt – something which he has long cherished while at the same time silence his critics? Another blockbuster promotion from international promoter Sammy ‘Don King’ Gello-ani is expected to draw a mammoth crowd this March 18. Featuring three international fights and one Philippine title fight, this boxing event is expected is to be another spectacular boxing showdown. Sponsored by Cebu City Marriott Hotel and Richmond Hotel, this boxing event will be shown on a delayed telecast over VIVA Sports’ boxing program, MAIN EVENT, the next day, 1 pm at RPN9. |
