MAYOL BATTLES KYOWA FOR WBC CROWN MAY 6 PhilBoxing.com Thu, 09 Mar 2006 The battle is on! Undefeated Filipino Rodel "Batang Mandaue" Mayol will challenge World Boxing Council minimumweight kingpin Eagle Kyowa on May 6 at the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan. This was posted recently by Boxrec.com, the internet keeper of boxing records. This will be an interesting match-up between two power-punching small men, each ready to claim their spot as one of the world's best in the talent-laden 105-lb division. The 24-year-old Mayol, a former national amateur champion under Cebuano sportsman Tony Aldeguer before his joined the pro ranks, is undefeated in 22 fights with 17 knockouts. He had held the RP minimumweight title, but relinquished it undefeated to vie for the OPBF crown. Recently, the 5'4 Mayol, now managed by Japanese businessman Yasuo Matsuoka, also relinquished the OPBF throne after three successful defenses in favor of his quest for the world title. The 27-year-old reigning champion Eagle Kyowa, who stands at 5'3 1/2, is expected to give Mayol his toughest fight to date. A Thai national now based in Japan, Kyowa holds a fearsome 15-1, 6 KO's record. His only loss came at the hands of Mexican Isaac Bustos, when, leading on points, he said no mas in the fourth round after injuring his right shoulder. There were intial plans to hold the Mayol-Kyowa in the country, but apparently the champion's camp had turned down overtures of a Manila fight. Mayol last saw action on January 28 this year, disposing of Mexican Lorenzo Trejo in the fourth round right at the latter's home turf in Cancun, Mexico during the WBC's Night of Champions. Rodel Mayol (left) poses with legendary Mexican strawweight champion Ricardo Lopez during Mayol's trip to Cancun, Mexico where he KO'd Mexican WBC contender Lorenzo Trejo last January 29. Among those who saw Mayol in action at ringside was the legendary Ricardo Lopez, who retired undefeated as a minimumweight and light-flyweight champion. Lopez, who gamely posed with Mayol for a photo-op, considers the Filipino as a 'great fighter' immediately after his demolition of Trejo, who is managed by Erik Morales. Also at ringside for the Mayol-Trejo fight was Eagle Kyowa, who learned for himself what he would be up to on May 6 when he tangles with the dynamite-fisted Mayol. |
