COUNTDOWN STARTS FOR 1ST GAB ANNUAL CONVENTION

The biggest boxing convention ever for the professional boxing community in the Philippines is fast approaching. Barely thirty nine (39) days from today the Office of the President per directive from President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo through the GAB will be hosting the historic conclave of local and international boxing personalities.

This marks the first ever boxing convention after the establishment of the GAB as a government agency, which is tasked to competently regulate and supervise the conduct of all professional sports in the country. The mandate includes waging war against all forms of illegal activities related to pro sports.

Massive correspondence with different boxing bodies is now being undertaken by the different committees tasked to carry out several aspects of the convention, from financial requirements, subject matters to be discussed in the event, awards and recognition to be given to those deserving individuals, invitations, hotel and accomodations, security details and protocol, co-participation of other inter-related agencies as co-partners of the GAB and the boxing event(Philippine Championship) during the convention proper to take place. We should be ready at least two weeks before the affair and that is now being undertaken by the good Chairman Eric R.Buhain.

"Success and the holding of a world-class convention are the names of the game here, if we have to carefully follow the instruction from the Office of the President," Buhain stressed, making clear his orders to all the active members of the convention committees.

What are the talking points of this Presidential pro sports priority program? First and foremeost, we have to showcase the best among the Filipino great fighters of the ring by way of recognizing our world champions who excelled and brought pride to the country. Secondly, bringing into fold our foreign counterparts and the top brasses of all the global sanctioning bodies in boxing into one venue for unity and brotherhood should be also be showcased. Recognition will also be given to them.

Third, we have to create an impression here and abroad that our nation under the incumbent leadership of the national political hierarchy is serious enough to produce more national and international champions for continued global recgnition. We are expecting about two hundred fifty (250) to three hundred (300) local and foreign participants from the ranks of bigtime personalities in the international boxing communities, local top promoters, boxing managers , referee-judges , calibered pro boxers, the awardees and our friend from the local and international press.


What can we expect out of this convention? Of course, not far from any other world fora and conventions that we have attended abroad. This GAB Philippine Annual Boxing Convention will include in its day to day forum the following agenda: Basic Rules and Regulations governing professional boxing in relation to the existing prominent rules and regulations that enveloped the international sanctioning bodies. Medical subject, the most vital and important aspect of the discussion, Officiating and the officials themselves to converge into one session.The GAB through its officials and some technical experts will also discuss the entrance of the "women professional boxing " as the same has been legalized in the country and the "Muai Thai" as another professional sport accredited by the pro sporting agency just recently.

We already have the lists of experts who will lend their professional expertise and services for the benefit of the delegates.

What we are expecting now is the total commitment of our pro boxing community to aupport this worthy endeavor.This is not primarily tailored for the interest of the agency nor the Office of the President, since this is not a political affair , but for the common good of our nation's pride THE FILIPINO BOXERS WHO LABORED SO HARD TO GIVE HONOR AND GLORY TO OUR COUNTRY, NOW AND BEFORE.
