GAB COMMENDS VILORIA'S VICTORY OVER MEXICO'S AGUIRRE

PhilBoxing.com

The Games and Amusements Board under the leadership of Chairman Eric R.Buhain happily noted last Sunday's victory by Brian Viloria over Jose Antonio Aguirre as yet another feather in the cap of RP boxing.

The Philippines is now fast earning the respect of Mexico after Brian Viloria, known as the "Hawaiian Punch," punched out Juan Antonio Aguirre of Mexico via a 12 round unanimous decision in the last act of Pinoy dominance over Mexican fighters.

We are pretty sure that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is the happiest person with this latest feat, proving once again our gallantry and bravery before the ring of international competition. The Filipino- Hawaiian boxer fell short of his own prediction to bring down the former straw weight WBC champ Aguirre aka "The Jaguar" from cardenas ,Mexico, and it wasn't an easy win for Viloria en route to retaining his WBC light-flyweight crown as seen by millions of his compatriots through satellite worldwide.

Viloria had to make some adjustments against the combinations of solid punches thrown by "El Jaguar" in the earlier rounds that almost cost him the title. But having trained and coached by the best trainer Freddie Roach, Viloria, who wore a green and gold trunk bearing the Philippine and American flags displayed a tremendous comeback starting from the fifth (5th) round down to the twelve when he almost controlled the tempo of the fight that successfully won for him his first title defense of the WBC championship match in the light-flyweight weight division.

Viloria was raised in the Ilocos region until he was five (5) years old before he was brought back to Hawaii by his doting father. He is so proud to be a Filipino. When I first noticed the trunks he was wearing yesterday during the fight, I could not help but cheer the sense of patriotism shown by Brian Viloria. He is a true-blooded Filipino being so proud of his roots.Viloria's character is admirable . This winning streak has been great so far since the series of victories courtesy of "The People's Champion " Manny Pacquiao over El Terrible Morales , Jimrex Jaca of Negros Oriental,Boom-Bomm Bautista of Candijay ,Bohol,Czar Amonsot of Candijay ,Bohol, Z Gorres and also, Rodel Mayol of Mandaue City and we are still counting.

What is more exciting here is the fact that all these victories were against Mexicans. I do not want to state the obvious, but I am sure that our Hispanic-speaking counterparts are now beginning to realize the hows and the whys of their continued losses to Filipino fighters.

What is needed now is the consistent governmental backing to be pursued in favor of our pro boxers. Sound and competent programs and policies to be implemented to cater to their needs and support. The incumbency of the GAB is so determined , per instruction from the higher ups to continually create an avenue for the further enhancement of some basic programs attuned not only to the demand of the present times but geared towards the benefit of the incoming generations. We hope that the big part of our national resources be poured out to install more pro boxing facilities , scientific trainers to train more quality boxers into world class, more advanced training equipments and better programs to ensure their future and safety. We are yet to hear from our top leaders and warring politicians to instead devote much of their time and efforts to this worthy cause for the attainment of global excellence. We have a bright future in boxing internationally.

We do congratulate and commend Brian "The Hawaiian Punch" Viloria for his successful title defense. No matter what other quarters may say or feel about it doesn't affect our admiration to our young and energetic fighter. Brian, your are one of those rare breed of great fighters worthy to be emulated by younger Filipinos.Keep it up, young man!

See you at our 1st GAB Philippine Annual Boxing Convention. You are one of those to be given recognition by the GAB.
