MAYOL TKO'S MORALES PROTEGE IN WBC ELIMINATOR By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Sun, 29 Jan 2006 Undefeated Filipino Rodel "Batang Mandaue" Mayol yesterday annexed the chance to vie for the WBC minimumweight title after he scored a spectacular fourth-round technical knockout win over Erik Morales-managed Lorenzo Trejo at the Plaza de Toros, a bullring in Cancun, Mexico. The fight was one of the featured bouts of the WBC Night of Champions, a gathering of more than 100 past and present WBC world champions. A powerful left hook to the jaw by Mayol sent Trejo to the canvas in the first round, followed by the Filipino's dominant stance in the second and third rounds as Trejo could not find an answer to Mayol's blows. Using his speed and power, Mayol then rained blows on Trejo in the fourth round, capped by a thunderous left uppercut that sent down Trejo for good at the 2:29 mark of the round. "It was just amazing! The Mexicans really applaud us now, especially after Manny Pacquiao's win and this one. As of now, we have two candidates to win WBC titles in Manny and Rodel. Mabuhay ang Pilipinas!" said an ecstatic GAB chairman Eric Buhain, who watched Mayol's fight at ringside, in an interview with this writer. With the win, the OPBF champ Mayol now improves to 22-0, 17 KO's, and the victory gives him a mandatory ticket to challenge WBC champ Eagle Kyowa within this year. Today's 10-bout card is presented under the auspices of the WBC Night of Champions, which is an event set to assemble more than 100 past and present WBC champions in history. Mayol, who was cheered at ringside by his manager Yasuo Matsuoka and wife Genara, was assisted in his corner by Filipino trainer Brix Flores and Japanese trainer Miura. Trejo, for his part, was cheered from ringside by Erik Morales, who was recently manhandled by Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Salven L.
