BUHAIN: PHILIPPINES WILL BE A BIG HIT IN PRO BOXING IN 2006 By Alex A. Paglumotan, GAB Commissioner PhilBoxing.com Fri, 20 Jan 2006 The ever active and dynamic chairman of the Games and Amusements Board Eric R. Buhain is very confident that the Philippines, under the GAB leadership, will be a big hit in professional boxing this year. A day before he left for Las Vegas, USA, to watch and closely monitor the Paquiao-Morales sensational rematch this coming Jan. 22, Philippine time, at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, for the WBC Int'l super featherweight championship, Buhain briefly talked regarding the agency's role of pump-priming the country's brightest prospects of pro boxing. The good Chairman, who is also a member of the WBC's Board of Governnors and Vice-President of the prestigious Oriental Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF), articulated to this writer his ideas to make the agency as a dynamic tool to better enhance pro boxing in the country in order to become competitive globally. Delighted over the fact that our very own Boholano champ "Boom-Boom" Bautista made it against Mexican Espinosa in their recent fight in San Diego, USA, and now with another Bohol pride Czar Amonsot coming up, plus the top rated Bobby Pacquiao and other top caliber and world-rated Filipino fighters, Buhain stressed his solid commitment for the agency to become a reliable support mechanism for our boxers in their pursuit of international recognition for the honor and glory of our nation. No doubt, the three of us members of the GAB Board, strongly felt that Pacquiao will bring Morales down to the canvass this time. With thousands of Fil-Ams and Filipinos now parading to Las Vegas to rally behind the Pacman and with the political entourage coming from the Philippines and with no less than the First Gentleman himself Atty. Mike Arroyo and his son Congressman Mikey Arroyo in attendance, surely our Filipino Champ will have plenty of support. I was even informed through e-mail that the whole Borromeo clan headed by Cicero D. Borromeo Sr. together with his dynamic sons Tootsie and Rusty will lead the Seattle, Washington delegations of Pinoys to cheer for Manny against the "El Terrible" Morales this Saturday in Las Vegas. Going back to what Chairman Buhain had told me, as the Officer-in-Charge of the GAB for the duration of his official travel to Las Vegas and then to Cancun, Mexico on 28th January to attend the WBC Night of Champions where he will be representing the Philippines on this very memorable occassion, Chairman Buhain stated that "we will not let the Philippines be left out in any global professional boxing forum. As a matter of fact we've been highly regarded and respected in the world as far as pro boxing is concerned." He had given me the green light to proceed with all the necessary documentation process, meeting our counterparts and with top officials in the national government and with individuals and groups whom we feel could be our partners for the realization of the GAB priority project dubbed as the "1st GAB Philippine Boxing Convention" to be held in the City of Manila. We are confident that with the full backing of the Honorable Manila Mayor Lito Atienza, who is a big fan and supporter of pro boxing, and of course the unprecedented support of the Office of the President through the ever supportive Executive Secretary Eduardo R. Ermita, the convention as planned will be conducted smoothly and in order. This will surely provide our Filipino pro boxers as well as the aspiring young generation to get plenty of encouragement to go on in professional boxing now or in the future. Leaving a legacy as the Big Boss of Professional Sports in the country, Chairman Buhain, who was an Olympian and a swimming gold-medal top grosser of the country in his years as an amateur, is determined to come up with a successful professional boxing convention early of 2006. That is why we are now an agency that is always on the go furiously working in order to meet all the necessary convention requirements. We believe in Buhain's conviction. Lastly, the end goal of the "1st GAB Philippine Boxing Convention" is to show and impress that we are capable of hosting future world conventions either for the WBA or WBC in the year 2007. So, expect whirlwind meetings among the GAB people and with professional boxing promoters, managers, referees, judges, medical people and supporters as we enjoin all of them to help us realize the agency's priority program this year.
