Javelin icon Lavandia seeks financial aid to defend crown

PhilBoxing.com

Twenty eight years ago, former Southeast Asian Games javelin queen Erlinda Lavandia rocked the Asian Masters Track and Field Championships by sweeping the gold medals in all three events she took part in ? her favorite javelin throw, shot put and discus throw ? in the classic held in Hong Kong.

She repeated the feat the last time the competition was held in Bangladore in India in 2006 as she and long jumper Elma Muros-Posadas filled the vacuum for the country?s failure in athletics in Asian level competitions.

In that same year, Muros-Posadas, who like Lavandia was the long jump queen in the SEA Games, also ruled her favorite event besides copping, too, the golds in the 100-meter hurdles and the 100-meter.

From 1992 up to 2006, Lavandia continued reaping honors in the biennial event snatching the gold medals in javelin in an unbeaten run 1994, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002 and 2004.
Muros-Posadas, who is now coaching like Lavandia, on the other hand, started seeing action in 2002 when she first won her Triple Crown, also in Bangladore which she repeated in the next two staging.

It looked like the Filipina athletics greats will not be able to defend their titles in this year?s edition of the prestigious meet set Dec. 2-12 in Kuala Lumpur.

Sighting luck of funds for the purpose, the Philippine Sports Commission denied their request for financial assistance for them to participate in the Asian Masters.

The duo, particularly Lavandia, are appealing to whoever is kind enough to sponsor their trip to Kuala Lumpur to the tune of P90,800 that will cover plane fares, hotel accommodation for 12 days, entr?e fees and per diems.

Lavandia is particularly calling on world boxing champion Manny Pacquiao, who like her is from Mindanao, but, who she doesn?t know how to reach, for help.

?Hindi ko alam kung paano ko makakausap si Manny. Pero sana mabasa niya ito at matulungan ako. Nakakahiya ang bansa kung hindi ko maidedepensa ang korona ko na magtatlong dekada ko nang hawak,? Lavandia told the Manila Standard.
