PACQUIAO, DONAIRE STILL IN THE TOP TEN POUND FOR POUND

PhilBoxing.com

The latest rankings of The Ring Magazine, considered as the most authoritative publication and generally accepted Bible of Boxing, listed Manny Pacquiao and Nonito Donaire in the top ten boxers of the world pound-for-pound. Pacquiao is still the number one boxer in the popular listing while Donaire is listed at number four. The Ring recorded Pacquiao?s address as General Santos City, Philippines but he is now the Representative of Sarangani Province in the Lower House.

Pacquiao has been on the pound-for-pound list for 353 weeks now while Donaire was included in the elite list of top boxers for 71 weeks now. They have been consistently maintaining their respective ranks for several weeks up to the present.

The WBO and Ring welterweight champion, Pacquiao realized his dream of serving the public after winning the May 10 elections and he has been very busy serving as a neophyte Congressman. He established a record of being the only active boxer in the country to become a congressman. He is scheduled to face Antonio Margarito on November 13, 2010 at the Cowboys Stadium, Dallas, Texas.

He is expected to pass measures on health, livelihood and especially sports. He even set his sights on retiring to concentrate on his work as a legislator and to serve his constituents. But the boxing world, particularly his countrymen would not want to lose the number one boxer in the history of Asia at the prime of his career.

Pacquiao was listed by Forbes Magazine at number six as the world?s highest paid athlete where he tied with NBA player Lebron James, who made a closely watched decision by the whole sporting world to join the Miami Heat next season. Pacquiao reportedly garnered a total income of $ 40 million or P 2 billion.

In his last fight, Donaire did not have a hard time beating Hernan ?Tyson? Marquez in Puerto Rico as he was heavily favored to win by a breeze. At first he was hesitant to fight Marquez because the Mexican just came from a loss to another Filipino Richie Mepranum last March by a unanimous decision. However there are no other boxers available to fight Donaire so he was forced to accept the offer. He won by an eighth round TKO.

After the fight he looks forward to arranging a world title match hoping to catch the elusive international exposure which eluded him in contrast to Pacquiao?s. He is expected to campaign in the next weight category having found difficulty in getting the 115-lb limit. Donaire is considered as Pacquiao?s heir apparent as the country?s top international campaigner in boxing should The Pacman finally decide to call it quits and serve full time as an elected official.

But Donaire?s address in The Ring?s weekly ratings was registered as San Leandro, California, U.S.A., probably because the WBA interim superflyweight champion is presently residing there. But ?The Filipino Flash? is a true-blooded Filipino having been born and raised in General Santos City, the producer of world boxing champions.

At number two is Pacquiao?s arch rival for world boxing supremacy American Floyd Mayweather, Jr. whom the boxing world wanted The Pacman to face to settle once and for all the controversy of who is the real number one fighter pound-for-pound. At number three is another Pacman arch rival and critic Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez, the current Ring, WBO and WBA lightweight champion.

At number five is American Shane Mosley, the WBA welterweight champion, whom Mayweather defeated last May. American Paul Williams occupied number six. At number seven is Argentinean Sergio Martinez, the Ring and WBC junior middleweight champion.

At number eight is Thai Pongsaklek Wonjongkam, the WBC and Ring flyweight champion. At number nine is Mexican Fernando Montiel, the WBO bantamweight champion, rumored to be Donaire?s next opponent. Rounding up the top ten is Wladimir Klitschko of Ukraine, the Ring, WBO and IBF heavyweight champion.
