MAGBOO-MAGBANUA WBO TITLE BOUT: BEST LOCAL MATCH-UP FOR 2010? PhilBoxing.com Thu, 26 Aug 2010 The championship bout between World Boxing Organization superbantamweight Oriental champion Nino Magboo of Batangas and challenger Rolando "Smooth Operator" Magbanua of North Cotabato scheduled Aug. 30 at the Mandaluyong Gymnasium in Mandaluyong City, Metro Manila could prove to be the best local match up for this year. Scheduled for 12 rounds, the fight is expected to be a toe-to-toe battle between two outstanding junior featherweights who each lost only once in their boxing career. Magboo, a southpaw who is defending his title for the first time has a record of 12 wins with 5 KOs, one loss and one draw while the 25-year-old Magbanua, a righthander who was a member of the Philippine national amateur boxing team, has 18 wins with 13 KOs, and 1 loss. "The fight could go either way," said matchmaker Ronald Jeres who got Magbanua last week as a substitute for Magboo's original opponent, Ramie Laput, who pulled out of the fight because of influenza. Magbanua's manager, former North Cotabato governor Manny Pinol who owns the Braveheart Boxing Club along with his brothers, agreed with the assessment of Jeres that the bout against Magboo could be a tough fight for Magbanua. "It is a tough fight but at the same time it will be a good test for Magbanua," he said. "Win or lose, we will be able to learn a lot from this fight that we could use in future big matchups," he added. Pinol, however, said he is confident that Magbanua would prevail over Magboo because of his deeper experience as a fighter having spent many years in the national amateur boxing pool. "Technical skills considered, Magbanua is one of the best in his division right now and I feel that his natural talent as a fighter will help him win over the champion," Pinol said. A victory over Magboo could boost Magbanua's chances of getting a crack at the world title towards the end of 2010 or early in 2011 as international matchmaker Sammy Gelloani and US-based promoter Sampson Lewkowicz are working on a big fight for the North Cotabato fighter. "The WBO Oriental championship could be Magbanua's passport to a world championship," said the former governor. Magbanua, however, is not taking Magboo lightly. "Kampeon sya, expected na preparado sya at magaling. But I will do my best," said the former college student who gave up his dream of becoming a teacher to pursue a boxing career. Magbanua and his chief trainer Noli Pinol are expected to fly to Manila a day before the weigh in. |
